SSD worth it ?

+1 to what adamknox just said, they aren't anywhere near worth the money at the moment. For the same money as a 128GB SSD I'd purchase 4 x 1TB drives for fault tolerance, or just plain RAID 0, and still have change left over. Then come back in a year and check the status of SSD's again, hopefully by then you'll be able to get a reasonable amount of storage without having to sell your parents.

Having watched a few youtube vids I fail to see why so many people are jumping up and down about SSDs. I don't care if Word opens in 2 or 5 seconds and I only ever put my PC in sleep mode so quick start up times are a moot point.

Added to this I can'tsee what use they are in gaming. Whats the point in being the first to load a track in F1 2010 multiplayer if you're sat twiddling your thumbs waiting for everybody else to load? Goes for every other online game too afaic.

When they're an established tech, without an extortionate £/GB ratio then I'll try one but we seem to be a very, very long way from that at present.

Fact is, if you lets say open 30 Word applications same time, a normal disk will suffer with opening times, whilst an SSD wont.
Also, about loading, it's not just online games.
Boot times are a plus.
The biggest plus IMHO is the more nippier response the PC gets. It is really a shame to have a new system, with so many capabilities, and being bottlenecked by your hard drive.
I've built an exact system as mine ( in sig) for a friend, but instead of an SSD he just got the WD as his main drive. HUGE difference in response.

It all comes down in my opinion as to what people think of as a "HUGE difference in response.".

We have two other systems in the house (excluding one laptop), all built by my good self. Mine as per sig. another has a Raptor raid array as the boot drive and another has a single WD Black drive as the boot drive. All three systems are similar in spec. with Windows 7 on them and I would have to be honest and say that in day to day usage, there is not that much difference in response / feel of the systems. Certainly not what I would class as HUGE. If I was asked which was the "fastest" then yes, I would pick the one with the SSD as the boot drive, followed by the Raptor array and finally the single WD black drive. But a HUGE difference, no... not in my opinion. Though obviously depends on what you are doing. In some tasks, obviously the faster drives shine. But overall I don't find the SSD based machine an OMG experience.

Do I regret buying an SSD? The answer would be, no. Though I stand by what I've said before on threads in this and other forums, SSD's are still not really mainstream yet. We need bigger capacities, much lower prices and decent performance that does not degrade over time.

Though one obvious application that an SSD does shines in, is in a laptop. Where drives tend to be slower than in desktop PC's (IE. 5,400 RPM and lots of "green" functions).

Only my opinion/s.

What is the minimum size you would buy?
Other than startup times, is it worth it?

90GB to 120GB if it was me. Though a lot of others seem quite happy with 60GB as a boot drive.

As to "is it worth it". Only you can decide really. Every persons requirements etc. are unique to one extent or another. On the whole, considering the cost / GB and the real world improvement you get from one. I would say "no". Unless it's for a laptop, or you have the money burning a hole in your pocket and just fancy trying one (that was my excuse). I don't personally see an SSD as a life changing experience over a decent mechanical drive set up. Though I know some disagree with me, but that's what makes life so much fun. :)

hi there, ive had a 128gig laptop ssd given to me , it might be a bit slower than the ones you can purchase on here as mine is a toshiba 1.8 ssd which doesnt have trim support.....and yea it loads windows up super fast and is fast at opening apps installed on there......but is it worth £100 or so for a small capacity drive......not in my opinion.....i was going to buy one but glad i didnt as its just too expensive technology at the moment......id go for a 1 terrabyte and save your cash till the technology improves and the gig per pound comes down......just my opinion.....im a casual gamer and have no needs for superior computing power.....

Most definately worth it. W7 doesn't even say welcome now its so fast. I play wow also and I can say also a massive upgrade their too.

it says welcome? you mean when you log in like on xp/vista? I actually thought theyd removed it since I only ran win7 on a normal hdd as dual boot and barely touched it until I put it on my ssd lol.
