Hi
Any pointers would be great...

Given the cost of SSDs, what is the realistic minimum size to go for? I presume that to get the most out of one you would need to install everything on to it, though I'd run out of space on a 60Gb drive pretty quickly I should think...
Any merit to having one if games etc are installed on a standard HDD?

Personally I think 128 is still too small.

I'd go for something like the 256gb crucial m4, that way I can use it for everything.
If I'm going to use a ssd, I'd want to use it for almost everything. Just going to wait for that to get to around 1:1 £/GB before taking the plunge.

noobie question here but if you have SSD you dont have to have the OS installed on it for it to work?

Sinse then you can have OS installed on the normal HDD which tbh isnt too bad given load times the only real issue with OS but the main plus is all those anoying windows updates can not waste space.

Then just stick the games on the SSD.

or im totally wrong and you need OS installed on SSD+HDD....in which case you wont have much space left for more than 2 games tops including updates

Would a 128gb be fine for os/office 2 games and a few bits roughly? Only play starcraft 2 and battlefield 3. Thinking of the M4 128 gb myself.

@jkingscott what drive you thinking of?

M4 too I think, £149? Though that might be pushing it a bit for me, for that.
I suppose its only really games that would need to be installed on the SSD? Couldn't office and stuff like that be installed on a different drive?

Only one way to go with these small SSDs, get a z68 board and enable Smart response tech, I have done this and it's so fast compared to a hdd only system while keeping all that lovely storage space. Boot up times are comparable to SSD only as well as game loading times being slashed and applications opening almost instantly, even shutting down is mega fast. So a nice big machanical hdd pared with a 64gb SSD is highly recommended unless you got silly money for 512gb SSD's
Go on give it a go, you'll be very pleasantly suprised.

128gb minimum is my personal reference point. After that you gotta cost in the factor of price vs gb

The only reason I haven't got an SSD yet is I cba to reinstall/decide what to stick on the SSD.

Run Spacesniffer on your OS drive and see what's taking up space.

Perhaps there's a load of junk which is taking up half your drive! I managed to clear about 35GB of stuff and so am now considering a 64GB SSD.

Well I just plumped for the M4 128gb. Can't wait to give it a whirl!
