they slowly lose performance over time,you will still have garbage collection that will maintain the drive a little,you can also secure erase the drive every 6-8 months or so to restore lost performance
 
TRIM only matters in very high volume situations. In the case of 99.99% of real world usage, as long as the drive has idle time here and there, it will take care of garbage collection in the background. Don't worry about it. It definitely won't lose performance over time as long as it has idle time.
 
You also have to manually align the partition properly as it is not automatically done like in Win 7.
