Last time I checked the price of a 1Tb SSD was £300 only a couple of months ago. I see you can get them for £150ish.

What's a decent make for a steam drive?

I always go for Samsung or Cruicial and have never had any issues.

Tbh for steam no difference in speed between 90% of the sata drives.
But reliability

Cruicial
WD / sandisk

Samsung 970 Pro 1TB is the best performer, if you can afford it. Then the Evo.
Also the Intel Optane 905p if you have a LOT of money spare, its not really worth it for gaming apparently.
