SSD's

gotcha, so you just whack the page file on the 2nd mechanical storage volume (as you should do anyway)

Well if you have enough ram then you do like me and do away with the whole thing. I have no page file on any drive and it's been like that since March with no problems.

^^lol.

The page file is really only useful if you run low on ram to prevent the computer from locking up. If you have ever used a really slow computer that you could hear the HDD churning with every command it's because that pc is probably hurting for more ram. So what it does is creates a page file which is a small space of your HDD that it uses as ram. You can imagine how that could be very much slower than using ram because ram has <1ms response (I think 0 response time iirc). That is the reason most PC upgrades are just adding ram and it makes the whole PC run faster.

unfortunately i only have the option of 2Gb DDR2 in my current HTPC so binning the swap file isnt quite doable yet :)

Why so low
Anyway swap files perform better on SSD according to Microsoft. They'll impact SSD life somewhat, of course, as will anything, but it should still outlast the SSD, at the rate the technology is currently progressing.
I have page file enabled on the SSD in my laptop (3.25gb usable RAM, due to mobo limitation not 32-bit OS), and disabled on my desktop (8GB RAM, no SSD :()

I thought that even if you set the pagefile to 0, windows still creates one?

The file remains, yes, but isn't used. So before disabling it, it's common sense to first decrease its size to 16mb and reboot - that way when you disable it you only have 16mb dead space on your HDD not 1.5xRAM size dead space.

hey guys now that i have decided on what size, can anyone tell me if the corsair p128 or the samsung pb22-j are affected by shuttering or use theJMicron controller?

hey andy, the same question i had and it basically came down to one will be fine. Two in raid0 will be slightly faster, but i mean only slightly.

The corsair uses first generation samsung controller, the pb22-j uses second gen samsung controller.
Both have 64MB cache and are immune from stuttering.

i am thinking of getting a ssd for my os and games will i be best off with one then?
and are the kingston drives any good?

Until we know what controller the kingston uses, assume the worst (they don't mention any onboard cache so it's likely to be a stuttery jmicron) and play it safe with a samsung first gen.

Since the samsung is cheaper and the same speed, there's nothing to lose really.

Why not just buy a 128GB G.Skill Falcon

Agree.

my steam games are loading a ton quicker, getting into servers is a lot faster, shutting down & booting up no longer chugs.

very happy with mine, and i'd imagine if i had another 3gb ram i'd see even more of a difference.

IMO 128gb is needed if you intend to install a lot of games and an OS, i have around 79gb free on mine right now.

Would i feel the fact the corsair si much slower if i bought one.

it seems liek a big difference in read and write speeds compared with the vertex or the falcon.

90mb read VS 220mb
70mb write VS 200mb

im however a bit tight and cant stomach the £100 extra. If its not gonna be much of an improvement for me il wait and hope prices come down.
