ST-3 Question

There's another ST-3 came up from local evans halshaw dealer, same spec by the looks, 56 plate, and 10k more miles for just shy of £11k, anyone think that would be worth a punt if it's in similar condition as the original one I've seen?

I think you should have a look around on Autotrader, eBay and Pistonheads to see how much the price varies for similar age and spec models. Then when you looking at stuff from a main or franchise dealer you can assess it's worth.

You pay a premium to buy from franchise dealers etc, I personally would want it to be immaculate and/or get them to sort out any niggles with it.

Edit: You can also look on somewhere like Parkers.co.uk to see what equipment is standard on an ST2/3 and what was optional extras.

Got a test drive booked for tomorrow for the original ST-3, see what it's like, then might go see the other 2 at that evans halshaw dealer on the way home.

Definitely see both, the mileage isn't so important as long as the service history is there from reputable places.

Enjoy the test drive ;)

I will do, lol.

Got a phonecall there, asking me if I would want a 2008, dunno if 08 or 58 reg, with 11k miles, and 1 year manufacturer warranty still on for £14k from someone my gf's mam knows. Sounds like an ST-2 though, as it has 5 seats, only other difference is it is blue not black.

So another contender has entered the frame, lol.

If its 2008 its probably a facelift model. This adds a few things like push to start button, upgraded stereo and the facelift body styling.

If you like the look of the facelift more and you can actually speak to the original owner its probably a better deal than the first one you mentioned when starting the thread.
As you can see there is plenty of room for shopping about when buying a second hand ST, and performance blue is the best colour

:D is all I have to say about the test drive.

Forgot to ask him but there was 2 lights on the dash one a yellow one near the rev counter which stayed on, and a red one near the speedo which went off some point through the drive, just wondering if the st owners on here could tell me what they indicate?

Cheers

Sounds like the temp warning (yellow snow flake below 4c and red below 0c).

The red light was more than likely the traction control.

Yellow one comes on when the temp outside is less than 4 degrees, it turns red when its 0 degrees and below. Just an ice warning. Not sure on the red one though im afraid :)

Just test drove the other one, it is a facelift model, felt a bit heavier than the first one that might be because the traction control and engine lights are on, it's booked in to get fixed under warranty by ford, only downside is it's a three door, and I think the exhausts are after Market? And it's been a weekend car, so there's a lot of wear on the outside of the tyres, so I dunno if it's been 11k hard miles.

If it's anything like mine also a weekend car. It spends Monday to Friday tucked up in a garage out of the wet. Warmed up correctly then driven hard then warmed down circa 3 miles in top gear, and then left idling on the drive while I open the garage, get in the garage and let it idle for a couple more minutes then turn off. Ask Matt100:D

I do 7k miles p.a. so the oil is being replaced well under the service interval of 12k.

They are heavy on the tyres and the outer edge is prone to wear.

Or you could get a daily runner, that has spent its week commuting to and from a place of work circa 6 miles each way and the hack down the shops etc doing 12k a year.

I know what car I would rather own. :)

I just have to weigh up the points really:

ST-2
08 Face lift model (plus point, ooooo Ford Power Button shiney!)
11k miles (plus point)
Blue (2nd choice, but still a damn fine colour never the less)
Spotless paint and alloys
3 door (2nd choice)
Fabric interior (2nd choice)
Engine light and traction control on (booooo, possibley caused by abuse, which could cause further faults later down the line?)
6 inch bore after market zorsts (bad point, ST-3 standard exhausts sounded far better)
1 years ford warranty (which I assume could be upped to another 3 year warranty still)
£14k private sale (dunno how much I could do price wise)
Tax up in July/August (I know, I know, I shouldn't be whinging on a car like this about tax, lol, but £200 is better in my pocket for the year, than having to fork it out 4 months into ownership)
1 owner

ST-3
07 model
30k miles (2nd choice, but not that much of a problem to me)
Black (1st choice)
5 door (1st choice)
Leather interior (1st choice, you lose a seat, but I don't drive with 4 people many times)
Scuffed alloys (meh, prefer if they were pristine, how much would a refurb cost?)
3 years 3rd party warranty company (I know some don't bother paying out, when compared with manufacturers warranties)
1 year’s MOT
1 year’s tax
Could try wrangling him down to £12.5k and full tank of petrol possibly

I'm kind of leaning towards the black one at the minute, it seemed like a better environment to be in with the leather etc. and I don't know if it's just because it was the first one I drove, or it was because I drove it by myself (I didn't abuse it, I just went a bit more cautiously on the 2nd one, cos the guy was in it with me, lol)

You can extend the warranty on the 07. It has to be under 60k miles with full Ford service history to be eligible.

PS 5 doors are gay on this sort of car. Ruins the whole look of it TBH.

After reading points on both of them the facelift looks and sounds likes its not had an easy time, who sells a car with not one but two warning lights on?

Get the ST-3 if you want leather and a five door, most ST are three doors. As said get them to refurb the alloys as part of the sale.

I think I was just getting first look in before it went onto the market after the traction control is fixed by Ford. But you just have to wonder why the engine light would be on, I thought the Volvo engines were pretty bomb proof, unless that just comes on as well due to a traction control fault?

Engine light warning on an ST is rare. Could be a fault (if it's not in limp home mode I'd guess at something related to air intake) or could be because of a mod.

Prices of these have risen a lot in the last 12 months. I got an 07 with 20k on it for £10.5k last March and sold it back to the dealer in September with 30k on for £11.3k - still think £13k is a little high so I'd try and barter a bit.

I test drove a couple and they felt different - turned out to be the tyres, check what they've got on them now. If it's the originals chances are they're a bit worn and if there are any signs of cheap replacements (I hadn't heard of the brand on the one I test drove) then think twice as you'll want to replace all four.

I ran Vredestein's too and they were excellent, completely transformed the handling compared to the originals. If you have the chance to get a facelift for similar/little extra I'd consider it as they will probably hold value better. The original is nearly five years old now and is starting to look a little dated, the facelift still looks excellent imo.

Stone chips are a PITA on these, my front bumper was a total state after 2 years / 20k and even worse when I sold it back - don't let them put you off as chance are most examples will be the same.

30mpg is optimistic but achievable, I never hit 35mpg on mine but probably could have at 70mph on the motorway. Shame none of them came with cruise really.

5 doors really do spoil the look and I'd try and find a nice 3 door if possible...

Awesome car all told, you'll love it whatever you go for :D
