ST-3 Question

If the facelift has an aftermarket exhaust chances are it's ran chipped all it's life and the warning light would probably be set off by aftermarket induction of some sort.

Not a problem really, the car is a solid piece of kit, just worth considering.

Beware that black is a complete PITA when it comes to swirl marks, especially if you're considering keeping it immaculate and shiney all the time. My golf is a month old and covered in them already, paid an extra £500 for the paintjob too :(

Its a Ford Focus hatchback not an Aston Martin V8 Vantage

He's right tho, they look better as a 3 door, like most hot hatch cars they look sportier as a 3 door (apart from the MK1 Leon).

Rolleyes are a bit harsh?

Yea but to say it 'ruins' the car and is 'gay'? Massive over-reaction which reminds me of groups of 17 year old boys insisting the 3 door Fiesta 1.25 is way better than the 5 door, as if 3 doors suddenly makes a hatchback into an exotic sports coupe.

dont touch the one with the warning lights on the ESP light is a problem with the MAF or worse, and probably caused by some dodgy remap or the induction kit has been fitted badly or is faulty, the engine light on could be anything but might be because it has a decat or shoddy exhaust system.

Are you sure the ESP light isnt a problem with... the ESP?

no actually the ESP light quite frequently comes on with a MAF problem! stop trying to be clever fox, most of the time the ESP fault is nothing to do with the ESP, I know cos mine kept coming on and i needed a new MAF sensor!!!!!

So you are saying when the MAF fails, the car throws up a light indicating a fault with the stability control system instead of the more unusual engine management light?

Is it an insecurity thing? :p

I think It is, when I got my ST I was fast approaching 30 (28) and after having a sucession of sensible cars, I needed to have one last 'youthfull' car before I hit 30 and had to start thinking about semi's in suburbia,2.4 kids and a golden retriever.

The 3 door ST fit the bit nicely, especially as it was a company car with free fuel.

Im 32 now and I feel content with my grandad mobile.......which is bright red with a body kit and a loud stereo:p

yes if you were a member of the focus st owners club you would know that, for some reason esp failure is often something to do with the MAF sensor or something in the induction. dont ask me why it just is!

That is the most bizarre and random thing ever. I cannot even begin to think what a MAF has to do with the ESP system :p

yep my dash said ESP failure, took to dealer and they replaced MAF all fixed, its also really common if your a retard and dont fit your induction kit properly

So in theory should not be sorted under the warrant but at cost to the owner? Common fault for those who mess with the car then?

mine was completely standard when they did the maf under warranty, but im guessing the one the OP is looking at hasnt been modded properly or something is up with it

Well done :)

I pondered the choice of spending a little bit more for a facelift 3 door when buying mine, but in the end, I realised that I was actually looking for a five door car, and I really didn't like the facelifts that much, after all, it was the original that I fell in love with at release.

The trouble is, a 5 Door ST3 will command a much higher premium than say a 3DR ST2, which is why prefacelift examples of former are almost comparable in price to the facelift examples of the latter.

Enjoy it, you should really explore remaps - I paid £200 for my Bluefin secondhand, and it completely transformed the car!

I believe the ESP system on the ST uses data from the MAF for one reason or another, I don't know the technical details, but it is well documented that MAF issues can cause problems with the ESP.

I forgot to ask, what ipod connectivity is there to the radio? I have an FM transmitter, but if it's got aux in that might be a bit better, because finding a static free frequency is sometimes a pain in the ass.
