St. Patricks Day vs St. Georges Day - in England

Bring back St. Edmund the original Patron Saint of England (well he was one of a fair few as we never used to have a single one ;))

Or we could say no to promoting religious fanatic role models and let their recognition die off as historical curios.

Christianity was enforced in various ways for hundreds of years once it got into the ruling classes, saint days are scraps of that mass manipulation.

You’re more of killjoy than St. Dunstan, who broke up a threesome between King Eadwig and a mother-and-daughter on his coronation day.

So we should get rid of Christmas then?

So we should get rid of Christmas then?

Christmas was overlaid on much older winter celebrations and in its turn is being hollowed out by commercialisation and disinterest in religion.

We don't have to do anything we aren't already doing.

There will always be a winter celebration. How religious is it going to be. Less.

In NYC at the moment. St Patrick’s day was a huge thing as expected. 4 hour parade up 5th and a sea of green all weekend. It was kinda fun.

if we could put landmines on the welcome to Cornwall point we would , after a few years of living here we all think , "turn around and **** off back to where you came from"
Yet the toll on the tamar is for people exiting cornwall not entering it…. Why could that possibly be?? Definitely nothing to do with keeping you Cornish (i know you’re not Cornish but pretend you are for a minute) peasants out of the shire is it.
Landmines on the border would be problematic as you’d most likely set them off whilst rummaging around on the floor for the next chip to lodge your collective shoulder.
Have at thee!

It’s a product of a terrible legacy of what “being English” stands for and reminds most non English people of.

Like it or not but celebrating being English is not a great look to most of the rest of the world. Very few other countries look upon their history with the English with any level of fondness. They always see a former opponent or oppressor from the old Empire days.

There’s no such stigma attached to being Irish.

Let me put it this way, think of how English people view the French in general. Now multiply that contempt considerably and that is how many people view the English.

Obviously this is an overgeneralised view and not about individuals but about national identities in general.

You may be right or it may be that the English appear to have this "obnoxious lout" label assigned to them (fairly or unfairly - your choice). Non-English members of the UK notice this when they go on holiday... You get a cold reaction from people who initially think you are English. As soon as you tell them you are Irish, Scottish etc they seem to immediately become more welcoming....
