After being stuck on the M40 yesterday afternoon for hours and then detoured through some random places when I got off I can safely say that an ST220 is awesome in the snow!

I picked the car up yesterday at 10am and this was my first drive of it, well impressed.

What tyres do you guys have out of interest? I'm getting mine in January, and it'll be my first car with low profile tyres - needless to say in these conditions I'm feeling a bit cautious!

What's the crack? My Mondeo is dire in the snow with a couple of month old Michelins..

Just knowing how to drive in the snow. Be very smooth with the clutch and pull away with no throttle. If all you get is wheel spin in 1st gear when pulling away, use 2nd. Don't rely on the brakes to stop you.

Only once have i got stuck completely with snow. And that was on a farmers property we were visiting.

Their landy had laid some nice tracks through the 6 inches of snow that he then drove through every time he went up / down the lane.

I went down it at night, when it was about -3, but couldnt get back up. Either side of the tracks was 6 inches of fresh snow and under that gravel, so nothing to properly grip on. In the tracks was just compacted snow that had turned to solid ice.

All of this on a uphill gradient. I had a shovel, so removed the ice from the tracks for a further 6 feet or so. Moved the car 6 feet, then got stuck again. I'd have to have removed all the ice off the entire track back to the main road.

So gave up, and waited till the morning when the temperature went above zero and i could punch through the ice and get some grip.

to be fair, the snow here has been compressed so is like ice and I need to get up a little hill to get out of my street.

I'm using falken 452's all round. At £59 a corner, I don't think you'll get better without spending £30-£40+ a corner more.

I can't remember what's on it, I'll have to check when I get it in Jan. If needs be I'll trade them in and put the money towards some nicer tyres - no shortage of love for the Contact 3s I see.

It's worth spending more on something decent though, as £100 a tyre for a 220bhp performance saloon is hardly extravagant.

to what though? when you're already spending £240 on tyres, I didn't really have another £160 plus to get anything different. I went with the falkens on recommendation from a couple of subaru drivers who have them on their STi's......haven't really let me down other than failing to get up an icy hill. Plus, my last set of fronts lasted 15k plus

You've gone and done it now!

Nah, cant be bothered to argue with the 'I bought a 3 litre 220bhp car but find £160 more on tyres unaffordable' crew, it'll turn into a stupid fight and there really is no point. Buy whatever tyres you want.

The 452's are £90 on camskill....no doubt cheaper elsewhere (hence why i got them for £59).

I'm sure there are plenty of tyres which are amasingly better, but I don't race the car and i've found these to be plenty grippy enough for the way i drive and the situations I drive in.

I don't see the problem. :)
