So im looking for modular or stackable external HDD enclosures, im going down the micro atx route for my next pc so i want to move my 2-3 HDDS outside and just keep 1 internal windows drive.

Question is what can i get? I know ULtra Products do a lovely looking modular range with a psu block but i cant seem to find it in this country!

Im looking for a system to allow me to stack 3 IDE drives in a simple way that isnt going to result in needing 3 power cables!

Any suggestions? Agaian the ultra range seems idea but unfindable any others which are similar?

hm.. lots of cables!

I agree - there's a gap in the market for an external cabinet with space for your old drives that can live out their days daisy chained internally.

These USB/FW/eSATA based cabinets exist, often with a rudimentary RAID0/1 support too (rather than a NAS attached by ethernet), but cost in the order of £200-300 excl vat (without drives)... I can get several TB for that in a WD MyBook Studio II 2TB with two 1TB drives in it (RAID 0/1 supported internally too).

It's the reason I decided to get a MyBook Studio 1TB - all my drive speed/space requirements for my MacBookPro. It's shocking to think it was only a few years ago I was posting up a thread on here as I created a RAID 5 array with 1TB with four 320GB drives, an old Barton based PC running SuSE 9.1.. (it's still going!)

There's the IcyDock MB561S but it's also expensive, I'm afraid there's no cheap solution to this at all.
You mention IDE drives so I imagine these aren't going to be that high capacity. You would be better off just moving over to higher capacity SATA disks before concerning yourself with external storage. Even with cheap USB enclosures you're still adding a premium of at least £20 per drive which would be better spent towards a 1TB disk.

the HDD's are 320 and 500 gig so fairly sized!

seems odd ultra are the only people to do something like this :(

Id considered a NAS box as well but a lot of the HDD's contents are vids which are generally watched on the 360 and there seems to be some debate as to which NAS's the xbox 360 can read happily so its looking like i wanna keep the HDD's linked to my main box

Looked into this recently myself and theres really not much out there. I ended up going for 2 dual bay SATA enclosures and just living with two power plugs.

There is a UK company that do custom build 4/8 bay enclosures that can b setup with FW/USB/NAS whatever, amazing stuff and relatively decent prices. Will email you the link.

Stuff like this:

indeed the plus side of the ultra solution is its fairly expandable and theres not a massive intial outlay in terms of setting up, I dont need to ditch any of my existing hardware and the solution is simple and tidy.

Im trying to track down if these products are available so far ultra have directed me to misco which dont carry any of they're HDD products :/
