Stalker any good

Anyone else really hate the first mission to get the research notes?

Loved the rest just hated that :(

I think it is a great game and well worth a look. I picked it up for a fiver from ZAVVI. I was avoiding this game from so much negative press. I'm glad I bought it in the end. It is a living world which changes around you. The weather effects add to the superb atmosphere. The A.I can be a little dicky in places but hey the overall gaming experience makes up for that. I haven't suffered any crashes or lock-ups.

Some of the areas you end up in are truly scary and can really make you jump. To get the most out of the game you need to take your time and explore like mad. Read all PDA material and try to seek out all the stashes that get marked on your map. There are some pretty cool weapon mods nothing new but it is nice to be able to tinker. Adding scopes, silencers and underslung grenade launchers etc.

The weapons can be a little frustrating to start with likewise the aiming. At the start of the game I used the Viper primarily for medium to short range combat. It has an excellent rate of fire. The double barrelled shotty is quality for CQB. You can even use the environment in some instances to help you out in a battle. There are various types of anomalies pretty much all of them are deadly to you and other creatures humans in the environment. Various suits later in the game have better types of protection against these anomalies. I still find it great fun luring a pack of dogs chasing you into an anomaly. It is something you have to do.

Most if not all the stuff you can buy from the traders will be picked up at some point in the game. So maybe try and save your spending beans.

Anyway I could gabber on and on as I find it a game that really appeals to me. I would say you need to play this as it is a brilliant game.

Its a bit of a spoiler but don't forget to look for Gordon's PDA ;)

I've installed Float32, SHARPER and stalkerskies (its in a weather effects package I found on filefront) and a realistic guns mod. Looks amazing.

I've just started Crysis and still thinking about playing STALKER :)

Will have to try all these weather effects mods. Would love to see some new skies, some of the ones in the game really were a let down in comparison to the rest of the graphics.

dark valley possible spolier!

heh Iirc there was almost no enemies in the dark valley lab, but with that thing moving things a round by the time I'd got most of the way down i was just down to my shot gun backup because of all the time I'd spent shooting anything that moved while pooping my self :(

Stalkers a great game full of atmosphere, depressing and misrable - when you check out the story of chernobyl from the many sources on the net you realise how close to the feeling of the disaster the game team have got.

Here's a link that includes many photo's of chernobyl and the surrounding areas - some could be screenshots.

And another one that's worth mentioning, make sure you do the 'meet the guide' mission and follow up missions, and make sure you go to streloks stash before you go to Yantar and the base there, or the game can go wrong and you never get the meet the guide mission. Otherwise you can't get the proper ending and you miss the best 2 hrs of the game (through the secret door) and you don't get the explanation of what is going on.

Apparently the story behind the pics is fake. They did go and they did take the pics but it was part of a tour rather than an "expedition"

I'm determined to go. In fact I'm considering driving there and back for charity. Serves my need to go and if I'm going may as well do it for a good reason :)

£6.25 - that sir is a bargain. I stopped playing Crysis after it crashed on me last night. I already had to start again after it crawled to an unplayable halt. (E8200 @3.4, 600/1000 640mb GTS, 4GB RAM, Vista64) So not exactly "slow" and theres no obvious graphical reason why it cripples my PC compared to a modded STALKER which hammers along at 1900X1200 on a 24" monitor.

I know I sound absolutely lame and am probably missing something, but how the frig do you do the first level!?! The pistol is awful!

The first camp? Go slow, let your team mates do all the work.

I slipped round the outside and came in from a different direction to the guys on my side. Picked off a couple and they did the rest.

STALKER is great. I can't see why people compare it to HL2 or Bioshock?
It's not linear and you set the pace of game. The graphics and textures are a bit different than most but it all builds into an atmosphere that suits the games location.
I've played it on later patches. It never crashes. I've never had a mission glitch and im playing it second time around. Yes to start with you are a bit confused and left to your own devices. Again that feeling matches the storyline and I personally thought it was an epic storyline for a game.
Im playing HL2 ep2, Dark Messiah and STALKER (again) at the moment and would'nt dream of comparing them.
It is a great game in it's own right.
