Play it in a dark room, fighting your way out of turning the brain scorcher off, with the volume LOUD. Holy ****. Scared the living daylights out of me.

As far as sheer atmosphere goes, i've not played anything that betters it. The lack of good weapons for a fair while is a disapointment though. Needed something sniperish at the beggining. You end up having to run at too many people with silly weapons.

If you use cover effectively you shouldn't need to engage in long range combat in the first few zones. It's not long before you get the Viper which is very decent at range and it's still an effective gun 8-10 hrs into the game. Also aiming isn't broken, it's just access to weaponry is structured progressively throughout the game. That means you start with inaccurate weapons, but the guys you're fighting have them too so it's not unfair. Pretty much every game limits access to the better weapons in one way or another.

Ignoring the fact that it's by no means as good as HL2 or Bioshock, it's still an ambitious, unique game well worth checking out. I recommend patch v1.4 for single player. 1.5 didn't work for me & many other players. The unpatched versions might reasonably be described as 'flakey as hell' , but with the right patch there should be no need to crash every 15 mins. Anyways good luck, it would be a waste to pass this game by.

i thought it was an awesome game, something original for once. yea bioshock was good but lets be honest it was a corridor shooter.

The AI lets the whole game down, too unrealistic, and felt completely scripted, if the game was sitcom it'd be The Simple Life when it could've been Married with Kids!

oh and its a sad affair when a PC games can be given a good review based solely on the fact that it doesn't crash.

Yeah, I think the AI was responsible for most of the delays and suffered the most cuts. The way the train station and car park in the garbage are constantly getting raided every time you go through those zones is dumb and it does spoil the immersion. I think the game could have done without that.

In other ways the AI can be really cool though, like when you see the dogs working in a pack and being bolder in greater numbers, or dragging bodies off to eat them. Or the boars chasing the dogs round. Or the packs of little rats, I've seen about 20 of them take out a group of 5 stalkers which was fascinating. Apart from the perpetual attacks in the garbage I mentioned above, I wouldn't say the AI were particularly scripted though. Of course some mission bits have to be scripted to a certain degree, but aside from that the game is still tracking a lot of AI moving round the game world on their own, which pretty much doesn't happen in most other games.

Try the AMK 1.4 mod. This is not a gun mod as in 'AK'. this is an entire simulated world. Has NPC's looting corpses, using medkits, sheltering from blowouts. It makes the game unpredictable and lets Stalkers roam throughout the zone and reinstates missing material from the vanilla game. Add a texture mod to this and you have a really atmospheric game world in which YOU do what YOU want. Anything can happen and often does. It also cures bugs and radically improves the NPC AI.NPC's perform flanking moves and also use grenades (unlike the vanilla version). There's also new quests including fixing up an old flamethrower! Best game I've played. EVER. Oh, except for System Shock 2 which was tremendous at the time.

I use to have the game, converted to a Mac, sold the game on after playing 20hours in... now I've got a system capable of running it again :D

This time though, I'm getting it from Steam, slow download but way faster and cheaper than buying off the high streets, can't wait to play it again.

Discussed the Chernobyl incident on another forum which has made me want to play this again.

I've just updated my machine and am right now downloading some mods (Weather overhaul includes Skies and SHARPER) and Float32. Plus patch to 1.0006 I believe.

I've got a save at the "point of no return" so I can go back and play like its a sandbox.

Fantastic game. I don't normally replay a game but I have with STALKER and I need a break from TF2 :)

I'd gladly put STALKER in my top 5 best games ever list, it is that good. The atmosphere and immersiveness of the game are second to none in my opinion.

As others have already pointed out, the game can start off a little confusing and getting to grips with the aiming and general gameplay mechanics can seem awkward, but the key thing is to stick with it and be patient. The game favours slower paced gameplay and a careful approach, minding your surroundings and thinking before you react. If taking on a military outpust with a crappy pistol and sawn off shotgun is a stupid idea in real life, then it is also a stupid idea in STALKER. You only get to play Rambo once you get the SEVA suit and the scoped TRS301. :p

Again, patience is the key here and when starting out for the first time I advise that you take your time exploring the confines of Cordon before you do any of the harder tasks. Getting to grips with the peculiarities of the aiming system and enemy behaviour will make things a lot easier later on.

BTW this site is very useful ~ http://stalker.heroesradio.com/index.php. Beware though that it is full of spoilers!
