I thought this would be best to ask in the games forum.

Are there any STALKER or STALKER 'type' (Scary, shooty, zombi, monster, mad professor, lonely feeling, post big disaster) books out there to read? Ive seen a few STALKER books but not in English.

Well... like Stalker. I dont really know how else to explain - Ive always read fantasy D&D type books, so i want to branch off. Since i like the atmosphere of STALKER i thought there might be books that contain that kind of setting.

The origin of STALKER is "Roadside Picnic" by Boris and Arkady Strugatsky. The Andrei Tarkovsky film "Stalker" was based on it (IIRC the people who enter The Zone in the book have a different name), and the game in turn was inspired by the film. The book was available in English, but I think it's now out of print.

But judging by your post, I'll bet money that you won't like either.

Roadside Picnic and the Stalker movie are both in stock on Amazon. I've heard the film is good but I suspect it won't be to the taste of most fans of the game. Likewise with the book on which it is based.

The film is good, but like everything directed by Tarkovsky, incredibly sllloooooowwwwwwwwwww. Breathtaking to look at, amazing atmosphere (like Oz, the real world is in black and white, and the Zone in colour), but far too torpid for most people. About three hours twenty minutes IIRC.

Yea. Some of the production crew died from an illness caused by chemicals in a river they were filming by (downstream from a factory) too, so just as hazardous as the real zone in some respects!

Managed to watch the first half (of the 2h45min version) before setting off for work. Its good, i can understand why you would say some people wouldnt like it but ive seen a lot of films like this. Not sure if it would be worth buying the 2 disk DVD version for the interviews though.
