Hiya guys, just a quicky.

So i have never seen an episode of neither. Although the boss raves on about stargate quite abit. So im thinking of getting my hands on a few of the series to see if i like them.

So far i am able to get SG1 which is fine but the thread is mainly for which series is the best to watch for Star Trek. Im worried that the old, old series' will be abit too old for me and ill struggle to watch them. So maybe voyager or enterprise?

Been told it doesn't matter which order i watch as their not linked?

Cheers

Start with The Next Generation (TNG) and either start with season 2/3 or watch from the beginning but accept that it took a while to find its footing.

DS9 is worth watching afterwards (theres no exact link except DS9 started during season 6 of TNG and one episode of TNG has DS9 in it for a few scenes and two of the TNG cast moved over to DS9, one at the beginning and one later on)

Voyager is decent but not exactly the sort of thing I'd use to get someone exposed to the good side of Trek. Enterprise requires a bit too much knowledge of the older series to enjoy some of the references and implications.

Could always start with TOS and the original movies if you feel brave but TOS especially is showing its age these days, probably better to watch them after TNG if it can capture your interest.

Have to admit the mention of Stargate in a Star Trek thread kind of confused me though :p

Was going to say something along these lines too. Picard was such a stiff in the early episodes :D
DS9 got a lot better after a few seasons. Loved it from series 4 onwards especially.
Voyager is marmite. I liked it, despite the amount of filler.

My preference would be to watch the next generation first as it seems to be the one with the most effort put into it and the easiest to get into and capture your imagination.

As for the original series it takes more imagination to get into but if you do it is worth it.

I totally skipped ds9 as it was too much like a space drama (i mean something akin to us watching friends now)

Voyager was really good in my eyes it was a really good series and is well worth a watch.

Enterprise totally slipped me buy after i thought they strayed too far away for what worked and tried something new which was not as good as anything else.

All in all it is worth watching them all and you can pretty much watch them in any order you want but there are a few character crossovers at some point but not to the point that it degrades the story.

Also other things to watch if you like these are

Andromeda
Farscape
A town called ureka

I'm always tempted to suggest DS9, although it'll spoil you totally for the likes of TNG, mainly because DS9 had major character development, an ongoing story, and a good mix of both dark and funny episodes (sometimes both at the same time).
It's much closer to the likes of Babylon 5, new Battlestar etc in that it had some form of ongoing story, and over time almost all the main (and a lot of the secondary) characters got fleshed out, it also helped that it wasn't always "the federation way is best" with anyone going against it automatically being bad, and even the "good guys" sometimes did fairly bad things.

TNG tended to be "ship gets caught in some sort of trouble, Federation morals are great, new particle discovered and reversing the polarity of the deflector dish saves the day. Reset and start again".
It's ok, but it really does get quite repetitive at times, especially the way things that happened in one episode rarely seemed to affect later ones much, if at all.

i think the whole thing is on Lovefilm instant

i would start TNG > DS9 > Voyager

and the ST TNG films when you get to near the end of TNG

DS9 is quite a bit different from TNG and Voyager..yep more sorta scifi soap heh (but if you liked B5 then you'll like it)

Oh yeah maybe watch original trek movies just because they're great :D And also because original cast members occasionally pop up in TNG, DS9 and Voyager.

Pretty soon you will be quoting wrath of khan like a veteran... :D

Enterprise i would leave until the end..totally different flavour to the rest of them. Starts out unbearably slow and dull tbh..improves but not on the same level as the big guns.

Curiously i find season 1 awesome but only AFTER ive seen all of them...its interesting seeing what they are all like at the beginning.

Thanks guys.

We was talking about them both but didnt want to start a seperate thread.

I am going for TNG season 3 onwards. Then if i like that DS9 then see how it goes.

Although werewolfs post kind of makes me want to start with DS9!

Watch TNG, then DS9, then Voyager for a bit of a chuckle, then The Original Series and the films, then Enterprise.

Punch your boss in the stomach for Stargate outside of the film, it's naff "open the stargate, got to an Earth like place, save it, go home". Only good bit is MacGyver is in it...

Then go watch new Battlestar, that was good, then maybe brave original battlestar.

Finally you'll be about ready to appreciate and enjoy Farscape, one of the best sci-fi programmes ever made.

Wouldn't be so fussed over Andromeda really, all I remember is it seemed like middle aged men obsessing over a female ship....

Also DS9 is the best trek! Just needs some TNG for context really, walking straight into DS9 would make anyone hate it as the way it is written assumes a lot more star trek knowledge within the dialogue, so there's less "oh the romulens that galactic empire for thousands of years" every time they spark up a conversation (MASSIVE exaggeration but its a plus point).

There's always the possibility that he may not find 'Trek to his tastes. Blasphemy, I know...

If not, get yerself some B5 and then BSG.

Going to give BSG a look into as well. I googled this and saw a women in a red dress ? Im game for abit more of her!

I've acutally just started the original series of Star Trek, it's not that bad after a few episodes, I'm enjoying it. Although you have to go into it with an open mind!

There is the amiated series as well, just to complete the list of Star Trek material you can get your hands on. I remember it being pretty good for a cartoon.

reversing the polarity of the deflector dish

But everyone knows this is like rebooting a pc, it's a universal fix for everything:D that or venting the plasma from nacelles, diverting attention or causing sensor malfunctions for the enemy!

I have a tip if you're buying sci fi series on dvd...DON'T OVERDO IT.

You WILL get burnt out and then you won't want to watch that show ever again.

I personally got burnt out on battlestar galactica by watching series 1 on dvd obsessively. I don't want to watch it ever again.

This goes for all series of course but sci fi is especially bad for this for some reason.
