Star Trek best series for a noobie?

Nope, Enterprise was gash because while a great concept, the cast was entirely wrong. I loved quantum leap as much as anyone but he was so wrong for Archer, Boobs McVulcan can't act to save her freaking life, the insanely awful translator chick, everything about her character was irritating.

The doctor was irritating but he's the kind of character you have in small doses alongside non irritating characters.

As with loads of series, when you get to know the characters better after a couple seasons, if you go back you can find your opinion of episodes/stories can change quite dramatically as knowing the characters changes how you judge their actions. A line that sounded initially as rude/mean you realise is just someone being funny, that kind of thing. So many shows get worse after a few series but TNG/DS9 in particular never got worse and mostly got better which is a testiment to how good the show/casts were.

Voyager like Enterprise just had too many irritating characters, there had to be specific types of characters and they were generally awful. Chakotay was ruddy awful, as was Torres(99% of the time), there were some brilliant episodes thrown in and 7 of 9.... if one person can make a series worth watching :p

As others have said though, TNG then DS9 is the way to go. Frankly I think you need to be a fan based off those two series to have the patience to sit through more than a few episodes of Voyager/Enterprise, either you'll love or hate those two but most people should seriously enjoy TNG/DS9/most of the films.

Hoshi is annoying yes, I do get what you mean overall

That's why I like farscape so much, the characters are all great, unique and flawed in the way they real

I did like boobs mcborg tho ;-)

Not sure if anyone mentioned this but TNG is on SKY in HD!

It's so so much better :D

I'm sure the ST stuff on Lovefilm is in HD as well (Voyager, original series).

Lovefilm instant is i have to say pretty spectacular right now.. lots of scifi available for a small sub.. Complete BSG is on there right now as well.

I recently watched Enterprise (I actually like this series), then TNG, then DS9 (first time I had watched this) and then Voyager.

I thought TNG was actually the worst of the lot after doing that.

For me it would be:

1. DS9 (Damn good Characters, Stories(Arc and Filler) and definitely the best space battles in any Trek series)
2. TNG (some good characters some bad, small overall arc with the whole Q Continuum trial of humanity, mostly good stories a few stinkers though)
3. TNG Films(Generations, 1st Contact, Insurrection & Nemesis)
4. TOS (The second worst of the series as I see it some good episodes some terrible it's mainly in at number 3 due to the next choice of mine having a lot of reference to it.)
5. TOS films(TMP, WoK, SfSpk, VH, TUC,)
6. Enterprise (Now I know what you're all thinking "W T F have you been taking!" But please hear me out now it started well with "Broken Bow 1&2" then had a hell of a lot of filler and not much happened in Season 1 until the end and Season 2 when they started to flesh out the whole Temporal Cold War Arc. Season 3 delved into the TCW starting to become an active conflict with the Sphere builders & Xindi taking one side and the Enterprise & Temporal Agents on the other until it all comes to a head at the end of season 3 and start of season 4 wherein we find the TCW becoming a full shooting war at it's Origin and as the episode unfolds end[pre-destination Wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff] then as Season 4 gets going we see the beginnings of the Federation coming to fruition... and then reach the finale sadlyThe rumors were they were going to delve into the "accidental" origin of the Borg the mysterious Future contact of the Xindi and the introduction of a fledgling Federation so I was kind of sad to leave it there. True there's a hell of a lot of filler and there are some dire characters[Captain Archer, Lt. Reed & Hoshi{although I have to admit I liked her mirror universe counterpart}] but for me when it did come down to the main story arcs and their episodes I think they did a bang up job.)
7. Voyager (As stated earlier it's the trek Marmite you either love it[I'm still not sure how this is possible] or hate it as do I in part due to the poor characters and mostly dreadful story lines but mainly due to the fact they made the Borg well idiotic and really just not that menacing tbh in the other series we see them in they're mysterious, sinister and seemingly unbeatable whereas Voyager manages to outsmart and beat them down as if they were a minor annoyance the only plus point IMHO was 7 of 9 and only because they made her wear that nice tight jumpsuit.)

Probably because it's older and looked a bit more budget/ropey/dated in comparison to the newer shows.

Now you tell me, I cancelled it only yesterday! (After having it for more than 2 years).

No Smart Tv and not available as an app on ATV. Had to go.

Generations is decent and First contact isn't bad, but Nemisis is horrendous, Insurrection is mostly gash, the original films are miles above them in quality. I think you've taken too much LDS ;)

I'm not a huge fan of the Vger film, but Khan, search for pointy ears, Whale hunt are all great films, okay they look dated but no less good films.

Anyway, one of the best things about all the series, is Q, he's mostly awesome in most of the episodes he's in. I'm trying to recall if he was in Enterprise, I feel like he was, and he should have been, I just can't remember if he was or not?

DS9 easily, just without question had the best space battles, though some of the borg stuff film and TNG were decent.

The last two films have had such woeful space battles big unbeatable ship and Enterprise with lasers with enough power to entertain a kitten but nothing more. Is it maybe the season 4 or 5 where DS9 space battles get freaking awesome.

Series finale... TNG was epic, All good Things is awesome in every way.

I have to say a lot of the older films are better. I tend the think the newer ones really drag on about things that aren't exciting with maybe a couple of cool bits,
Generally after watching some of the series again I think ST as a whole isn'tthat good
just like an old milk bottle.. To much milk and a tiny bit of cream

Epic music tho in films

I do and don't like Q. The episodes are good, as long as I don't think about it too deep.
There are certain parts in ST series that are very good tho

Dominion wars
Borg
Species 8472
End game
Wolf 359

I do actually like Enterprise, it's a bit more exciting in story than the others

I hate episodes like ones where diannas mum comes in,
Or in Voyager where they just visit a pre warp boring culture etx
Also the prime directive.. Break where necessary but justify

TOS is the best star trek. If anyone thinks differently they don't even know what they're on about.

Why not just do it right from scratch and from the beginning ?

TOS
Star trek films 1 to 6 Only
TNG
Star trek film 7 (Generations)
DS9
DS9 season 5> Watch Star Trek film 8 (First contact)
Star trek Film 9 (insurrection)
Voyager
Star trek film 10 (nemesis)
Enterprise

Have a break

Then enjoy the Reboot Star trek films

Reason why I am suggesting it, this is the ultimate Star trek experience !

You can't ignore The original series it was corny yet epic and started it all off and it will allow you to REALLY enjoy TNG and beyond. When you finish the undiscovered country film the ending is simply put beautiful, it allows you to appreciate TNG ;) Watching the films in-between the shows as I mentioned syncs them up ie wild example would be trying to understand why Khan is Khan or why Worf is on the Defiant and not Enterprise.... if you started TNG then go back and do TOS first you will thank me afterwards!

About a dozen other things like that but I do not want to spoil it and ruin the experience... you will just have to put faith in this sad trekker !

I quite liked them all, if you have the time I'd watch them in chronological order starting with the Original series. If you don't have a lot of time, then as others have said, watch The Next Gen before DS9 as their is some continuity from the former to the later.

Although many people panned Enterprise I really liked it.

On the HD front, only the remastered TOS, first few seasons of remastered TNG (believe the blu ray releases have just hit S4) and about half of Enterprise (Ent switched over to being broadcast in HD sometime during S2 or 3 and the S1 blu rays have recently been released) are actually HD.

Anything else is just upscaled. Hopefully if the TNG blu rays continue to do well they'll remaster DS9 next.

but it does have all of the series, yes? because I'm thinking it's going to be the best way for me to watch it if I continue to watch the remastered original series
