Star Trek Beyond

I've only been to the cinema a handful of times this year and regret going to see this.

I think I could have anticipated its badness if I'd watched the trailer beforehand however. Compared to the 2009 original it's just silly.

Star Trek (2009)

Star Trek Beyond (2016)

As soon as they announced Justin Lin as director I knew exactly what we'd get. And it's exactly what we got. An action movie that had the trek name and characters but is about as far away from a real Star Trek film as it's possible to get.

What i love about trek movies is the ships have shields but they rarely ever seem to do much. 1 minute they show the shields as a bubble that extends outwards from the ship stopping damage, the next its basically skin tight to the ship and only minimises damage from impacts.

Seems to be a pick and choose approach as to how they work depending on the movie\series.

Pretty awful for me too. I think part of the problem with the film format is you lose the story arcs and character development which you get from the series. For example, Wrath of Khan, Undiscovered Country and First Contact worked so well because you could link him to an episode and knew more of the background. That saved the film from having to develop the villains too much, wasting time, and let the story develop. With this format, and no series to back it up, you lose that and end up with one dimensional bad-guys who are poorly developed.

I felt this was a problem with the first film and insurrection. The first reboot overcame this (partially) by being "new" by having the reunion of the old crew, but I still felt the villain was weak.

I don't think simply knowing about the ST universe, including dynamics and histories of the different aliens (which may be altered now anyway) alone is enough really.
