Star Trek Beyond

Weak villain, again and the way they beat them was a bit corny.

A bit corny? :D That's an understatement...I mean, I was forgiving it all the other naff 'science' bits...but really, wtf? Something like that worked well in Mars Attacks...but not in a non-spoof film...

To be fair, I enjoyed the film overall, I just need to forget the above scene :p

Also, when did the viewscreen on the bridge become an actual window? And I would want better toughened glass than one that breaks that easily with 2 shots from a hand gun :p

Klingons are old hat we need the Borg back, but a new Alternate Universe Borg. Its quite plausible that in this timeline they meet them earlier than the TNG crew. Just get Q in it too and its a winner winner chicken dinner. Although its already been decided ST4 has Kirk's Dad in it so queue Time Travel. Yawn.

At the BFI Imax, which made the
mountain jumpstart
and
Beastie Boys frequency jam
scenes pretty awesome.

Sadly, most of the high energy actions shots just became a garbled mess of blur and stutter. Not sure if that is the actual filming, or a side-effect of the 3D.

As for the film. Not a patch on the first 2. Disjointed, poor flow, and far too much forced humour. It was borderline cheesy comedy for the first part of the film.

Jaylah was cool, as was her home set up.

Baddie was lame and difficult to understand a lot of the time.

It was also very easy to predict certain scenes as they were painfully set up, like
the bike being the obvious choice for the diversion
and
the music being used to mess with the swarm

Spock also seemed to be phoning it in, which I am notice more and more with certain actors/actresses who have been 'franchised'.

Yorktown made me have ME flashbacks. Much Citadel :D

6/10, but only if doing 2 for 1 or watching at home :p

ps. Suicide Squad Queen trailer was SWEET!

Saw this the other day. I felt it was more of a faithful love letter to the original series more than anything else. Those sound effects and costume seemed notably camp. The mood was fairly light and the dialogue not dissimilar from old TV episodes (which some might have said was cheesy by today's standards).

It was nice to have an original plot rather than a retelling, so I enjoyed that. I didn't find the Beastie Boys bit too jarring. It was just supposed to be fun. Likewise, a very minor point the green hand reference and reappearance was great. Was good to have a female lead that wasn't '**** mcgee' as well.

However.... Really, really weak villain driven by inexplicable 'revenge'. Enough with these!

Overall - watchable. Not in a rush to see it again. 6/10. Bump to 8/10 if you're a big fan of the original series.

Agreed on the tedious revenge plots. Nero wanting revenge for Romulus, Khan wanting revenge for being blackmailed, and now another one. They need better villain stories.

They also need to stop blowing up the enterprise.

The chick with the white hair was super hot though. Forgive it all for that.

Urban has Bones nailed and is the best thing in this for me. As a Beastie Boys fan I loved the Sabotage scene which made my hairs stand on end even though it was a cheap MacGuffin.

I enjoyed the film the way I enjoy a chinese takeawy good at the time but leaves me with a mild stomach ache and feeling empty.

The plot was ok, but as ever the JJverse feels very shallow and very millenial. Because of course the cursed planet would only be a 2 minute flight from the next place you need to be.

I loved Chris Pines little nod. Back at the beginning of the first reboot it's the same track he played when he stole the Corvette.

Would be nice to see Shatner get a part in one of these movies at some point, its been rumoured since this new series of films started and not happened yet. His death in Generations was pretty hokey and that's even after a reshoot, originally he was simply shot in the back. He's 85 now which is scary to think about, just needs to be the next one or never. :(

I just can't get over Generations being 22 years old!

tell me about it. I watched Shatner's documentary on the the first few years of TNG last night i couldn't stop thinking there's really not many of the original cast left :(

Did you by chance watch the red letter media review of beyond first? That's where I heard about the tng documentary :p

There's only 4 left of the main cast iirc, Shatner, Takei, Nichols and Koenig. Shatner is the oldest at 85 and Koenig the youngest at 79. Deforest Kelley was the first of the main cast to die in 1999.

Would be nice if they could do something with the remaining cast in a Trek movie somehow, just seems almost unbelievable that there's only 4 left and they're pretty advanced in age to say the least. :(

Couldn't agree more. Absolutely spot on.

To be honest, I think the whole thing is cast really well and have achieved what they set out to on that front IMO.

No idea what they are going to do with Anton though :/

Can't remember if I posted my original thoughts on here but aside from literally missing 1/2 the film due to The Mountain (or a guy of similar stature) sat in front of me, I thought the film was good.

Star Trek wouldn't be Star Trek if there wasn't suddenly some way they could use a technology to get them out of a jam, but there again they did that in ToS and TNG, plus most that grew up with TNG would have seen similar with the A-Team and MacGuyver in using a toothpick to disable a nuclear bomb - I think people get too hung up with things sometimes and have to suspend disbelief a little more, after all it is science fiction not science fact!

That said, I thought the ending was a little weak and I guessed quite a way before final scene how they would defeat the bad guys.

Solid 7/10 for me. I really do like the franchise and have watched the first two a few times now and certainly will happily watch again. Not as good as 2009 and I really did enjoy Into Darkness (USS Vengance....)

They should really have made the next Enterprise more along the Vengance line but appreciate that isn't the same purpose.

Klingon's next and would love to see a bit of Borg action going on sometime.

I hope they can keep the actors together for a few more films, I'd read Quinto wasn't sure if he was going to do many more films in the franchise.

I give it a 7/10

Bored of revenge plots. Bored of the Enterprise being destroyed. The plot was fairly predictable and I didn't think the super weapon was very super at all. Somehow it felt a bit more TNG than the original series. The problem with Star Trek is they mostly follow a similar formula so are getting a little boring now. Still enjoyed it but wouldn't be in a rush to watch a second time.

But the interaction between the leads is always good as the casting for them has been spot on. It was a little sad watching Anton knowing he died soon after. But the white haired girl (Sofia Boutella) was very good and I just realised she was Gazelle from Kingsman (the bodyguard with the razor feet). Hot too under that makeup :)

She was awarded a Federation membership at the end. I wonder if they shot that part after Anton's death with the intention of replacing his character with her in future films?
