US: Star Trek: Lower Decks (the new animated series)

Most of the first season was like tha5. They toned it down a lot since, I really didn't enjoy this week's episode but I love Rick and Morty.

I love Rick and Morty too, but i enjoy Lower Decks because it's Trek and enjoy R&M because of it's wackiness - RM and Trek should not meet! :D

If the story was a R&M episode, it would have been great, but as a ST episode it was ridiculous.

However, i did LOL, when Rowda starts singing. I thought we were in for a full on musical number, but then, "Ka, CAW!!" - i nearly peed a little.

That last ep with the birds, omg the language on that ep is appauling. Even tho its edited ppl know what there saying. Im 40 and for trek i was always glad they kept swearing out or at least one off rare occasions i.e data on end of generations film. But i dont think swearing like that or in the other modern treks should have been allowed. Who does it help, really..

Tho i didnt recognise the voice it appears jeff combs was in that last one too.

Yea the ds9 ep was nice but i didnt think kira or quark sounded right, i know there getting on now but i dunno they just sounded fake to me, im thinking its the bad silly writing that caused it.

That was an awesome episode, I love the throwbacks to other series - funny line about the kelvin timeline :D

Not too keen on the swearing either, but so much better than last weeks abomination.

Watched most of this season, figuring that maybe if I ignored the more Rick & Morty-esque moments it wouldn't be so bad.

And...

It's not great. But it's not horrendous. It's waaaaaaaaaay better than Discovery, but then so's dysentery so saying that feels like damning it with faint praise...

The thing is, it's so much better thought out than STD. Even pretty simple stuff, like starship interiors. STD has, at several points now, cut to a bat **** insane interior shot with the USS Discoball that could never possibly fit inside a God damned Borg cube let alone a 450m long starship with minimal hull bulk. Here, in a cartoon that you'd almost not mind taking such liberties, we get stuff like this.

Rutherford looking over the MSD of the unmanned Texas class USS Aledo:

Notice how the decks are all uninhabitable? Kinda like the decks of an unmanned ship would be?

C'mon Trek people. Bring this kind of thought and attention to detail into the live action stuff, will ya :D

This is why I stopped watching Rick and Morty. Other people watched it think they invented ******* animation or something.

I rewatched all of Lower Decks recently in advance of Season 4 starting.

The early episodes are still pretty crap, in the main. It took them a long ol' while to make Mariner someone you can actually sympathise with. And yeah, maybe it's that the utter wretchedness of Disco has reset my expectations with Star Trek on TV but I'm genuinely quite enjoying the show at times now. There's a reverence for the Trek universe that's completely absent in much of modern Trek. Even SNW, as good as it is, often feels to me like it's trying to replace TOS. And Picard didn't get truly good until they embraced the idea of it being one last ride for the TNG crew and ship.

The S4 premiere:

A full-on love letter to Voyager. And it doesn't pull any punches on the 'Janeway murdered Tuvix' argument!

Shaxs and Freeman said:
SHAXS: "Did Janeway figure it out?"
FREEMAN: "No! She just murdered him!"
SHAXS: "W-well there has to be more to it."
FREEMAN: "She isolated the genomes and split 'em up. He begged her to live."
SHAXS: "Holy ****! Janeway didn't mess around."

In true LD fashion it gets very silly, but no more contrived than your average episode of Disco.

it was great!

my favourite thing in the first ep:

neelix silhouette pose when they are talking about tuvix, its got like cheeky chappy arms and legs and made me properly lol
