US: Star Trek: Lower Decks (the new animated series)

Season 5 starts today on Paramount+ in the US, don't know if that's the case for over here. Two episodes released today, then one a week (ten in all).

I rewatched the series in preparation for S5 coming out. I still find the first couple of seasons a bit of a chore, the first half of S1 especially. But credit to the showrunners and people making the series, they figured it out. It's funny, my snap judgement of this series was that it was gonna be hot garbage and it's now one of my favourite Trek shows. My snap judgement of Discovery being hot garbage meanwhile held true from the opening two-parter all the way to the tacked-on coda...

Only half way through S5E1, all good so far, enjoying the off-brand version of Star Trek this gives us while we wait for something deep and nerdy.

S5 is on UK Paramount+ , just looked and first 2 episodes out.

If it gets a movie they need to do a Star Trek: Generations and keep everything the same, but make the "sets" darker.

Lower Decks fills the perfect gap where you're not sure if you want to watch immature cartoons or Trek.

Nobody watching this? We're 7 episodes in no comments?

Gotta say i'm not feeling this season :( Just finished 6, cubes and orbs at war - just seemed silly and and if they were out of ideas. The ending was a total cliche too.

I've watched them all. Bit of a surprise guest Star in this week's one. Well was a surprise for me.

I am guessing the alternate reality wormhole thing from episode 1 will be something to do with the finale.

he didn't sound like him (to my ear) but like someone doing a impression of him. still it was a good watch. and a bit of setup for later

I think for me this season has been the most uneven since the early days. The opening couple of episodes - great. Then the nanite one, which was pretty meh. The Klingon one was fantastic. "Starbase 80?!" didn't quite work for me, which I think boils down to it veering into 'weird for the sake of it' (though it did chalk up a Trek first with the interrobang in the title!). And the less said about the cube vs sphere episode the better - between Boimler's character development regression, the fact that we did this better in other Treks (TOS' "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield" for one), the weird tonal disconnect between the 'humour' and the actual story...

And then the latest one, which is back to being really good. Lots of fun nods to Trek canon, and some pitch-perfect dialogue. That's definitely Brent Spiner as Purple Data's head there, and he gets some of those great lines (the bit with Tendi about chewing through her bindings, having seen Worf do it before and Tendi remarking on how he really is "fully functional" :D).

Rutherford's beard is similar to the one LeVar Burton occasionally wore playing Geordi as TNG went along

Lower decks is what I was hoping discovery would be when they mentioned doing trek from the eyes of Junior officers. Mariner pulls off being a junior rebel member so much better than Burnham ever did. An average episode of LD is still more entertaining than anything discovery has kicked out.

Add another episode to the 'half decent' pile this season. "Upper Decks" was a fun one.

I liked this weeks episode showing the 'other side' of some of the crew. Could have been slotted in earlier in the season though.
