It is probably better to watch Generation before DS9 (taking Worf and O'Brien come from Enterprise to DS9), but it won't make a huge amount of difference.

Voyager is practically completely separate from both, so doesn't really matter.

The beginning of DS9 is very slow but the later series contain some of the best Trek episodes.

That was my experience too, and Enterprise isn't that highly regarded from what I've heard from some, though I've enjoyed most of it.

What series of DS9 are worth watching then daz?

I found DS9 was pretty good until season 4 when Worf came, then it got much better. I would definitely watch The Next Generation before watching the rest of DS9 though as it sets you up a little better for DS9 and you'd probably enjoy it more (not just for Worf, but for the better understanding of the Cardies and Maquis). TNG is very very average through until Season 3. Season 1 is too new and everyone doesn't work well together, Season 2 got some new doctor in who was extremely annoying, and finally Season 3 got Beverely back as doctor and they all seemed to act better together (and Riker has "the beard" :p). And then after DS9 I'd watch and try to tolerate Voyager :P

Personally I skipped most of DS9 as I found it boring compared to VOY and TNG.

 ...DS9 is so far ahead of the rest of Star Trek in terms of storyline and character development though. DS9 is a masterpiece of Trek, it's brilliant by far the best, although I will admit that it doesn't really start to get good until Season 3 starts, when they get the Defiant, and gets much better still when Season 4 launches with the epic 'Way of The Warrior' 2 parter and Mr. Worf joins the crew and the conflict with the Dominion starts to get more significant.

No other Star Trek has story arcs like DS9, or intrigue and stories within stories. And the villains in DS9 are just fantastic, so much more well developed than the typically shallow 1 or 2 episode ones you see in other treks. take the character Dukat, just brilliant, you aren't even sure if he is a true villain or not for most of DS9, then their is the unexpected, such as Kai Winn and there was Commander Michael Eddington and even the villainous exploits of Cassidy Yates at one point. No other Trek series has this kind of detail and depth.

Then again, my absolute favourite Sci-Fi series of all time is Babylon 5, it's the one thing that is even better than DS9 to me, a true master-class in science fiction. I prefer the ongoing 'space opera' approach with galactic politics, diplomacy, war and everything else that goes along with it to the one or 2 episode stories of traditional Star Trek, with new characters and such almost every time.

I didn't like Voyager much at all, I found it quite shallow and boring and lacking 'quality' and depth. TNG is always worth a watch, some episodes are very poor but some are also very good, it's quite close to original Star Trek in the 'adventure' factor.

I think i'll give ds9 another shot then, i never gave it a fair go compared to the others. I often find i prefer more action-packed superficial episodes though, some of the concentrated alien charcter building isn't my cup of tea. Each to their own though. My favourite series is TNG, particularly after season 3 as mentioned.

i love trek post kirk (sorry, but the original was just plan boring) and pre-enterprise which was a complete blot on the history of star trek.

DS9 and TNG are my favourite series', DS9 has a simply brilliant story arc which is really interspersed well in to the individual episodes. TNG had some of the best characters though.

I'm going to probably watch Enterprise again before I start watching Next Generation, it's a shame it only went on for 4 series :(

Personally I find TOS the best. Use of Shakespearian type story lines, as well as just plain generally awesome stories and compelling dialogue that completely overshadow any lack of CGI.

I still love TNG, and as already said later later DS9 episodes were probably as good as Star Trek has been in recent years.

Enterprise could have been brilliant but obviously it was wrapped up prematurely.

Slightly OT but I have a friend who's a big fan but he didn't understand this and told me it had nothing to do with Star Trek:

Then I find out he hasn't seen all the TNG episodes

Timber, his arms wide! :D

Enterprise was awesome from the Season 2 finale onwards, and the story arcs in Season 4 were superb (the Vulcan Kir'shara arc was one of my favourite set of Trek eps ever), and Shren is one of the best characters in Trek ^_^

They cut it down in its prime, all the other Trek series took at least 2-3 seasons to really kick in, and Enterprise was just the same, yet they cancelled it before it had a chance, a real shame.
