Star Wars: Knights of the old Republic

It has been a while since I've played it, but I can't remember anything off the top of my head in the story that needs to be "modernised". Anyone think of any examples?

People are nostalgic about the story, and in 2003 it was better than most stories in games, but they are forgetting the game is nearly 20 years old and the plotlines and story has moved on a great deal when it comes to modern games. Even Mass Effect and Dragon Age are better written because, probably because some of the same people worked on both and had matured.

I know you specifically called out the story, but also:

A lot of small environments, lots of grey or brown corridors.

Menus are really clunky, so are the controls really.

Some of the missions/quests are really obtuse and don't really give you a clear indication of where to go or what to do. That's not to say I need my hand-held, but nor do I want to be walking around aimlessly.

The turn based combat is really too easy and could certainly do with a massive overhaul IMO.

Cheers. I don't remember much about the UI tbh, nor the menus. I don't recall being annoyed at them - that's not to say I wasn't. Obtuse missions sounds familiar though! But they always seem to be part of open-ish RPGs, so I kinda expect them to some degree.

At the time they probably didn't seem that clunky, but things have moved on a lot in 18 years.

Things that seemed fine back then, are a pain in the arse when more modern games have made things better.

Wonder why Sony have this and not Microsoft? It was MS who had the console rights with the originals.

Also wondering why it's on PC anyway. I don't believe for a second Disney wants to be loyal to a past generation of gamers.

KOTOR is a good example of a game that warrants a remake because unlike a lot of the stuff you see these days (Crysis, Mass Effect etc) it's actually old enough to be a bit clunky and need of optimisation, improved graphics etc.
I rank it as the best RPG I've played (Dragon Age Origins very close) but I'm not sure how much of that is down to nostalgia and despite occasionally itching to give it a go I have a feeling I might end up a bit disappointed. As I recall the first planet where you have to go in the underworld with Mission etc drags on quite a bit, you have a much smaller party, no lightsabre etc.

KOTOR and Jedi Academy were star wars on PC. Amazing games.

Almost forgot Xwing vs Tie fighter

I'll be honest, I was surprised they didn't redo Dark Forces (not played, so maybe it's rubbish) and then move into DF2:JK, JK2, JKA.

Remember them being good but it was a long time ago, on hardware far far away...

Spotted the saga on a steam bundle a couple of years ago and snapped em up.

I will get around to playing them again at some point, would definitely prefer to play a remastered version :D

Yeah that's an issue these days, with the trend of remasters you never quite know whether you should try an older game that hasn't been remastered yet in case it subsequently is. I think I bought like the Baldur's Gate and System Shock games and then they got remastered so it puts me off buying old classics I missed out on at the time.

FWIW I thought Jedi Academy was much, much better than Jedi Outcast.

@HangTime the BG remaster wasn't that big AFAIK if you have both BG1 and BG2, because you could mod 2 to run 1 and BGEE is a tweaked version of the BG2 engine from what I know.

I have replayed KOTORI &II multiple times over the years. Hundreds of hours across them both so I love them and will definitely play this. The story is better in 1 but I prefer what you can do with you companions in 2 with regards to the force and training etc.

Anyway, yes the UI definitely needs an overhaul for a modern game as it is very clunky and someone playing it now would not appreciate the combat system in its current state I'm sure. The graphics are obviously massively outdated but once you start playing it you kind of forget and just get absorbed in the game.
