Hi guys!
I am aware there is an official SC2 thread, but I am trying to play online, and keep losing- I get the odd game that lasts about 30 mins but it just feels as though I am always on the back foot, and I'm never really in danger of winning.

I am aware that I should be reviewing replays (and I do) and reading loads of tactics (read some), but I work full time and go to college in the evenings, so I can't invest that much time.
I do not wish to become the best player ever, but want to become slightly competitive in at least bronze league.

If there are any other people out there that are in a similar situation, then please add me:
ID: Gosshawk
Friend code: 989

Play some evenings, but mostly weekends. Sticking with Terran at the minute to learn the game a bit.
It's annoying - I love this game, it plays really well, just I keep coming up against really really good players (and I'm rubbish) and its slowly ruining it for me.

So if you're up for some "training" games, then let me know! Or if you are one of the good ones, any quick tips/handy websites please?

Post ID's here and maybe we can get an OcUK training clan on the go

Why can't this just go in the SC2 thread? Would make sense having this if we had like 50+ people here who play but there are only like 4 or 5 active people in the sc2 thread, seems pointless making a new thread.

I learnt by watching day 9 videos, and playing 2v2, 3v3 and 4v4 with experienced players.
Haven't played in a while now though and I don't have a working computer to start.

Go onto youtube and look up some beginner terran strategies, get your timings down on them by playing against AI, then go online.

Try out Day9tv on youtube.

Also make sure you watch pro replays on gomtv.net

Try to emulate strategies and think deeply about the reasons why these strategies are used.

Most of all, flow like water. It's about reactionary decision making.

I would actually recommend not watching pro replays, especially at bronze level if you're trying to learn. A lot of what they do you'll straight up die emulating as you don't have the micro to hold the dozens of all ins you're left vulnerable to. As others have said, watch some Day9 vids and figure out one build for each matchup and then just keep practicing!

This.

When i was in bronze i just focussed on macro. Resource and unit production, nothing else. If i did well i could just attack move my army and win because i'd be so far ahead.

Because whenever you try and look for help in a thread like that, your request ends up getting lost within the experienced players chatting about other stuff.

That's pretty good sounding advice, thank you! Would save me a lot of time and when I get the odd hour or two to actually play, I can play, rather than watching other people play! Haha.

Thanks! Will keep at it! Don't forget to add me if you are a good player, and you want to try out a different race or whatever too!

This is how I'm approaching everything too - I watch the replays back and people build a 2nd base pretty quickly, so gonna try this as I usually build loads of defense for my main base and build a new one when minerals start to run low.

I'd happily offer to play a few games with you, you're very welcome to add me on voidptr.167.

Tbh on the OcUK side of things in general your best bet is to join the "OcUK" chat channel. There's usually a few teamgames going on every so often, I'd like to see people start 1v1'ing again in there.

It's really a shame the community here's died down, a few really good players pushed away either by annoyance at the game or just real life in general :( there's still the hardcore few that still post in the main thread, so do post in there as much as you can/like. :D lots of advice and friendly banter to be had!

To add to this, try and watch some other Bronze/Silver players streaming if you can and see if they're doing anything different to what you're doing. I'm a Bronze Terran and have had a lot of help from a Diamond/Masters player (he got me into the game) and so have had him to help me out and teach me a couple of build orders and strategies.

I am around most evenings/weekends so can pop on and have a few custom matches if you like?

Hey,

I play in stops and starts, so I can relate to a good game that I don't have that much time for but when I do it's this.

Best thing I've found to get better is just play, learn three builds for TvX and play them, play them every time, win, lose, draw, get them down, Play against AI, play vs this thread but just play them.
When you lose, hit play again.
After a time you'll find yourself with extra time to do things, you'll remember that you need to get back to an action and you'll do it without even thinking.

The next thing to do is use units, SCV's to find things out, its a very dark map when you don't use units to find out what the other person is doing. So take an SCV and run it up there to find stuff out. Then work on keeping it alive with the extra time you have found.

The next thing that comes with all the losses you will get is placement of buildings, when to move out, expand. This was the biggest curve for me, when to push out and there's no point waiting around for confidence to do that, that is the fun of the game, taking risks.

With the info you find out, the timings of the opponent, use that to your advantage, if you walk up and he has (TvT) bio and medi's and you don't, fall back, keep the game going, how are your upgrades? where are your medis? Will they see you taking a new base. On top of all this spend like there is no tomorrow, if you see high money, spend it now.

There's not even a gold player in me, and that's due to time spent with this game but the actions I've got down, it's what I work on every time, even for 30 mins.

Last of all, don't panic, even the opponent sends a builder too early, gets cannon rushed, drone rushed but if you look at that game and know where you went wrong, it might take ten times for that to happen before you get it but you will see signs to look out for in the next game.

gl hf, gg :).

You on tonight? I'm a silver 1v1 player looking to try out Protoss. I'll be on the OcUK channel.

Sorry mate, only just checking this before I go off for the night, will be on tomorrow for an hour or so though - got college mon and tues evenings after work see.

Thanks for all the help everyone! I just managed to survive for a 50 minute game, felt like I was in with a good chance at one point, then the guy pulled his force back and destroyed my attack force and slowly chipped away at me.

I am too used to playing Cossacks:EU Wars when I was younger, where I would build and awesome base with loads of defence, and attack from there - can't get away with it in this game though! Haha.

Placed in bronze league now and the games are much closer, so enjoying it a lot! Still no wins though! haha.

If you want to play me, then add me and chat through sc2 - also, how does once access the OcUK chat that has been mentioned?

Gonna read a few tactic ideas before bed now

This is a pretty awesome post, good to hear I'm not the only one learning these things - seems like everyone knows what they are doing on there except me! haha.

Look up FilterSc. He has a Terran guide for each league and it focuses on teaching you ho to macro properly so that you've got benchmarks to work towards like 50scvs at 10mins. You build just marines in it and attack at certain timings.

It works well because In Bronze and silver you can practically just Amove with a big army and win.

Just to add this thread will disappear in a weeks time, they always do apart from the official one.

Cool, will go and have a look at these tomorrow. Finished my evening college for the week now, so can concentrate on gaming now! haha, will add people, try and find the OcUK chat channel too.

And you reckon it will take a few weeks for this thread to disappear? Very optimistic of you! Haha, thought there may have been more people new to the game that wanted a few games.
