Stargate

I always welcome new Sci-Fi and the Stargate universe certainly has a tonne of potential for storytelling.

I found SG-1 and Atlantis were best when they were light-hearted and not too serious, I guess because of the team behind it and the cast they chose. I also really liked the idea of Universe and it had some good actors but I felt the potential wasn’t met as perhaps the writers couldn’t exploit the more serious tone and ideas properly. It did seem to be getting better when it was cancelled from what I remember.

I’d say there’s plenty of room to explore new storylines but I do fear using some of the previous team may lead to a temptation to try and reignite the old formula which probably won’t fly in 2025… Hope to be proven wrong, I will be watching.

Huge fan as SG is amongst my all time fav shows but haven't read much into this news yet. Hated what they did with Universe so I guess I'll wait on the sidelines for more info.

Red Flags already, why bring back Roland Emmeric in any capacity? 99.9% of the worth of the franchise is due to the show's not the movie.
yeah this - the film was crap.

Well its amazon so i expect the new series will be rubbish, but i'll give a go - hope springs eternal

It was such a shame SG Universe was cancelled, I was really enjoying it at the time. I've even rewatched it a few times. It was darker and gritter version of SG which obviously didn't resonate with a lot of fans.

I can't rewatch any of the original shows though, I catch them occasionally, but they just come across as cheesy due the comedic fluff. It worked at the time, but I'm not sure it does now.

Hopefully they get the balance right in the new series.

The only thing I didn't like about SG Universe was the new implementation of hand cams. Instead of focusing on a set point, it was moving all over the damn place trying to keep with the motion of the scene.

I don't mind they tried something different even if it went completely against the previous hopeful themes of the previous two series, but I'm fairly sure the show was sabotaged by SyFy which was starting it's ridiculous slide into wrestling by then.

Universe would have been fun if those two birds weren't getting laid every two seconds, and don't get me started on the stones of fail. It was budget BSG to me.

Controversial opinion here, but I liked Stargate Universe. Where SG1 and Atlantis were a very similar recipe, SGU was different and I think it just needed a bit more time to get itself established. I thought it was a great addition to the Stargate franchise without being another repeat of the first two. I think the mistake they made was not keeping Atlantis going another series or two so that SGU could get established as a different version of a Stargate show.

Not Controversial, a lot of people liked it..

I just hated the camera work so never continued with it

I don't usually like shakey-cam, so either there wasn't much of it or it calmed down pretty quickly, as that would normally have put me off too. For me, the characters and story worked, production quality was high and the actors were good. It's the sort of thing that we used to take for granted that is now sorely lacking in many new shows. It doesn't help that anything good is barely given time to establish before it's cancelled.

I hated all the characters, apart from Eli.

Bloke from zombie movie and military guy was the worst, literal sociopaths.

At least Doctor Smith from Lost in Space had funny moments..like using Will as a human shield

That's what made it interesting for me. Lots of incompatible people trying to figure out how to work together and survive. If it was all happy-clappy singing and holding hands around the campfire, I wouldn't have found it engaging. I liked that it was dark and gritty, and not just another military team working with the backing of a government. They were just doing their best with what they had, trying to figure it out as they went along.

I think another version of SG1/Atlantis would have just been more of the same thing they'd already been doing for fifteen seasons, so I'm not surprised they tried something different. I think the timing was bad because that's when Syfy was cancelling everything that was sci-fi and transitioning to reality TV and wrestling.

I guess if you like toxic and depressing shows like Eastenders, SGU is right up your alley.

Work together and survive? They literally stabbed each other in the back, stealing food of each other, if I recall they created two different groups as they couldn't get along, and they conspired with enemy to do the other group in.

That's if I'm remembering that turd of a show correctly, I just wanted them to die.

That's the early part of the story. They were working together a lot more by the end of the second season, and even Rush was playing nice. They were mixed bag of people (including a lot of non-military) who were stuck millions of light years away from home, in danger and having to scavenge to survive. It makes sense they acted selfishly/badly until they established some kind of safety and understanding of how they needed to pull together to survive.

It's okay if you didn't like the show. Not everything can be for everyone, which is why I think it would have been good if Atlantis had continued while Universe found it's feet.

BTW, I've never watched Eastenders.
