Starting again

After graduation and a few months with family in Hampshire, I moved to Taiwan with a backpack and no plans. I had two friends here who I'd met travelling in 2006 and kept in touch with, one of whom fortunately owned the most popular bar in the city for foreigners, so he introduced me to everyone, including my now wife.

6 years on and we're moving back to the UK in 10 days, again to stay with family at first (though this time in the East Midlands), before moving... Anywhere I can work really. Hell of a lot more stressful with a non Eu partner and a lot of accumulated stuff, and no handy guy on the other end to make my friends for me :p

Still, challenge etc. Still have residence here indefinitely, as long as I'm married, so can always come back.

This thread is very apt, as it's the situation I now find myself in. Following the breakup of my marriage, I now find myself living back in the village I grew up in and went to school in.

My brother lives 100 yards away in the same street, which is great as we can hang out, play video games and drink beer without me needing to be sober enough to make a 10-mile car journey home again.

I'm a curry fanatic and I have an awesome curry house that's a five-minute walk away - bad news for my waistline when I'm trying to eat better. About three doors down from the curry house is the local pub - it's a proper village local, not the awful glorified restaurant masquerading as a pub that was in my previous village. There's always a couple of guest ales on draught, which is great for me - hence my forum name. Must confess I've been in there often enough to be on first name terms with the landlady and was recently pleasantly surprised to bump into a couple of blokes I haven't seen since I left secondary school over 30 years ago.

I can get to work in 20 minutes now, instead of the 45-50 minute haul it was before - ironically, both villages are the same distance away from where I work (albeit in different directions), but as I no longer have to run the gauntlet of the A14, M11 and A505 it makes a huge difference.

The first 24 hours living there were a huge culture shock (waking up in my own place the morning after moving day particularly), but then it dawned on me the level of personal freedom I now have, and going out & about in the village was a massively enjoyable nostalgia trip.

It feels like the best thing I've done for years - I love going home at the end of a work day, which is a testament to how toxic the environment in the marital home had become over the last year. I'm so damn happy in my world right now, so I'm expecting something to come along and ruin it imminently. Being back where I grew up is a blast - everything's the same, but different (if you know what I mean), which is to be expected after a 20-year exile in another village.

Yeah I mentioned you in a thread a while back and really admired how you just escaped everything with your move. You are probably one of the most content people on this forum tbh.

I'd love to go to Cornwall but I just don't think it's right for me right now. It may be my end game, however as I absolutely love the place. I just couldn't find work right now. :)

That is my plan really for end game - I am close to being mortgage free. Do a menial job after that if I wish as long as I can get by and keep my SIPP payments up. :)

I moved to NZ about 4.5 years ago and it's been a good move for me. I'll stay until I get citizenship and then reevaluate my options. I really like it here but it's FAR from the rest of the world - which can be a good thing, but I'm still too young to settle into dotage somewhere in the south island. I'd really like to do a few years State side but the visa part might be tricky.

Anyway, will keep an eye on the thread.
