Starting LotR, any tips?

Practically everyone, including myself will advise you to join Laurelin [EN-RP] server as it's the most mature and helpful.. but you'll probably end up on Snowbourn [WoW-Emulator] server.

Healers are covered in many ways with the Minstrel the main one followed by the Runekeeper and maybe a Captain as backup. I have no knowledge of classes in that 'other' game you mentioned and would advise you not to compare it to Lotro as they are worlds apart.

Visit Lord Of the Rings Online Official Forums

and enjoy the best MMo since Star Wars Galaxies :p

**also search this forum for many Lotro threads**

Damn you!

Your persuasive post has made me give the game another go, see if I can get into it again :p

Any UK Laurelin kinships taking newer players? I fancy rolling a new character after not palying for a while and would like a nice group of people to play with :)

I am in Serenity - few other OCUKers in there as well.

Largest Kin on Laurelin so normally people around to help out.

(I am Myrdanimyr on LOTRO)

Gilrain server, best by a mile, didnt like Laurelin personally, but that was mainly back nearer launch (was that REALLY 3 years ago now). Take your time leveling, the story is great and you should do your best to enjoy it. Make sure you go through the shire at least once for one of the most unique leveling experiences in any MMO.

Not wanting to hi-jack the thread but rather than start a new LOTRO thread I just want to ask a few questions.

Firstly playing through the game at a steady pace and enjoying the game a lot, great story but I want to know what the heck Destiny points are used for? I see they can be used for short term speed, health and xp boosts but is that all they are for or do they become more useful at higher levels?

Also what is the game like at higher levels? I know it is a more PvE focused but what is it like in regards to access for newer players?

Is it like WoW where it is ridiculous need ubersuperOTT gear to do anything and have done the raid even before it is released and dedicate your life to actually play the higher level content? Or is it more open friendly whereas with some half decent gear and some willing people will let me play the higher end content with them and are generally more easy going? Also do I need 59 different types of mods to do a raid (are there even raids? :p) and a whole evenings game time or is it more chilled than that?

Great game and the Laurelian server seems really friendly and fun! Thanks in advance for the help!

Destiny points are basically small things to help aid you in the game, i quite frankly, never use them.

You don't need OTT gear, the stuff you pick up from quests is good enough, plus a decent group is the way forward as the game areas get's tougher as you progress and higher level players do let lower players in on their action too.

Destiny Points are better used for obtaining more skills as you rank up a 'Monster Play' character, each level you gain requires more Destiny Points, whereas on your PvE character you pay cash for skills. When playing a 'Creep' you can easily obtain tons more 'DP' via Quests in the Ettenmoors ranging from 125dp to 2000dp.

Regarding PvE and equipment, the game does not require or force you to obtain the 'best'gear however some instances require 'Radiance' armour to alleviate 'Dread'. The instances to get such armour are quick and fun and just require you to be of a certain level to enter.

Sounds promising then :)

The whole trait thing and that and how you gain extra skills through combat rather than just levelling is a nice touch.

Level 12 now and really enjoying it so we will see what its like getting groups, if im having no luck will go after a guild, or whatever they are called on LOTRO :p

Kinships.

dont bother being a champ, its fun until you get to Barad Guldur and realise you can't raid due melee hate from devs.

destiny points in PVE are used as a supplement to hope tokens in some of the late game raids and as you said, short term xp gains boost and also the remove some of the dread effects due to death in the late game (that's what I use them for). it is also shared and accumulated across account, so each of your characters has access to the same pool of DP.

re gear and raiding, there is a "radiance gate", though the gear is much easier to get now (the first part of it anyway). as you get to level 50 you'll start the moria content which introduces the watcher raid (which was the first radiance content?). you get the tokens for the rad armour by doing the moria instances (Fil Gashan, the Grand Stairs, Forges etc) and complete it by having 2 drops to complete the early set.

then i'm a bit unsure as I'm not really that far through it yet. Siege of Mirkwood introduced 2 more raids with multi radiance requirement, though again there are mirkwood instances that you need to repeat to collect the tokens to get higher rated radiance sets, which then gets you into the end game raids.

you can still do the old siege of angmar raid content without radiance, it is mostly level 50 stuff (CD, Helegrod etc) as there is no radiance gate.

you're not barred from doing the raids without radiance, you're just about as much use as a chocolate tea pot in the group.

so yeah, i'm roundabout right, the forums, Lorebook, and mmodb are all good to get a guide to or an overview of stuff.

have fun :)
