Starting LotR, any tips?

having played wow since Korean beta and quitting over 2 months ago! i find my evenings sometimes to get a little boring and would love to play another MMO where my life isn't consumed and i can level at my own pace!

i have no idea about LOTR tho and after reading and looking through some screenshots it does look very good!

what class would u recommend which is based around healing (hybrid) or a range class that can buff groups etc i played a druid as my one and only main character in wow with alts being a rogue and dk! i love playing any type of role (healer, dps, tank)!

gonna do the 10 day trial as i'm skint until the 20th!

destiny points in PVE are used as a supplement to hope tokens in some of the late game raids and as you said, short term xp gains boost and also the remove some of the dread effects due to death in the late game (that's what I use them for). it is also shared and accumulated across account, so each of your characters has access to the same pool of DP.

re gear and raiding, there is a "radiance gate", though the gear is much easier to get now (the first part of it anyway). as you get to level 50 you'll start the moria content which introduces the watcher raid (which was the first radiance content?). you get the tokens for the rad armour by doing the moria instances (Fil Gashan, the Grand Stairs, Forges etc) and complete it by having 2 drops to complete the early set.

then i'm a bit unsure as I'm not really that far through it yet. Siege of Mirkwood introduced 2 more raids with multi radiance requirement, though again there are mirkwood instances that you need to repeat to collect the tokens to get higher rated radiance sets, which then gets you into the end game raids.

you can still do the old siege of angmar raid content without radiance, it is mostly level 50 stuff (CD, Helegrod etc) as there is no radiance gate.

you're not barred from doing the raids without radiance, you're just about as much use as a chocolate tea pot in the group.

so yeah, i'm roundabout right, the forums, Lorebook, and mmodb are all good to get a guide to or an overview of stuff.

have fun :)

Thats really useful thanks very much :)

Playing a minstrel but only at level 12 at the mo, going to be a slow levelling process as I have just bought a new house/busy at work and the the world cup but im just going to enjoy it. Story seems pretty damn good.

Are there generally groups running earlier content or am I going to have a nightmare getting stuff and having to beg people to give me a hand in doing the content?

Also what are the level caps? I know (well think I know) that the level cap is 65? What are the earlier raids levelled at Angmar and Moria?

Great game and still really enjoying it! :D

Well endgame stuff (and level caps without the addons) is level 50 for lotro vanilla, 60 for Moria and 65 for mirkwood I believe.

Not sure on the 'raid levels' as such but its around those marks.

Personally got to level 57 in January time (did from around 37-57 from the release of mirkwood in December) and never did any of the vanilla (lvl 50) raid stuff, i wasnt in a guild and there was little demand for public LFF runs.

Aint touched it weeks now, but may re sub if i feel the urge to play again, though there is little left to drive me as I'm not really into the end game and raid stuff and getting last bits of moria and into lothlorien then mirkwood (which I still want to do).

If no one has mentioned it, remember and join the global LFF channel (Laurelin has one I know), not very usful on the sub 20 levels but handy after that.

No experience with WoW so can't compare but a new class was added a while back to Lotro called the Runekeeper which is a hybrid healer/DPS in light armour. The class is extremely versitle and depending on the situation can switch from out and out damage to single/group healing (also has the single highest one shot DPS).

Most classes in Lotro don't come to life until level 20+ which is relatively quick and easy to achieve, I would suggest looking at the above RK or a Captain who can tank, buff and heal (albiet not substantial, but effective).

no problem :toppa:

from what i understand from kin mates, the minnie is a slow leveller but on the plus side you're always in demand. re the grouping, joining the glff channel is a good call, it's mainly the spam channel (on Snowbourne anyway) but there are always shouts going out for instances across the level ranges, there aren't many below 50 really, thinking about great barrows (25 or so?), Garth Arwen (around 35?) and then Fornost (40 ish) - again someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

it used to be a lot worse, Volume 1 of the epic books is now solo so you won't get held up looking to finish it, if you've not done it yet I highly recommend it, you get some reasonable gear, explore the world and see the story.

the latest patch brought with it meta deeds for completing clusters in an area, so Carn Dum and Uru have been really busy the last week with people doing the deeds and stuff so you shouldn't have too much trouble finding a group. you can pretty much skip the group stuff at lower levels (if you want to) as there are loads of quests everywhere for you to level with, plus you can always come back to it :)

re the level caps, everything here is right as far as I know. in order to get into Moria you've got to complete the first part of Volume 2 epic story (you can do it around 48 ish i think) where you get your first legendary weapons and open the door to the deeps! in order to get into Mirkwood you have to get rep with the Gladarhim (sp) in Lothlorien, then do another part of the epic book. it all comes pretty self explanatory when you get there though.

re the classes to choose, I've never played WoW so can't compare, I have though got a high level hunter (a bit boring ranged dps) and my new main the Loremaster. the LM is a debuffing, CC, pet (limited dps) class - I love it!! it has totally rekindled my love for the game. RK is fun, as is a warden though I have neither of these past 20.

i would advise joining a kin though, if you get a good one they should always be on hand to help out when you need it :)

Minstrel is actually pretty quick to level solo now using war speech (toggle ability that butchers your healing but turns you into an offensive caster, basically).

Certainly much faster than my captain, although both were slower than hunter, who just kills things at a silly rate.

Fun Fun!

I will hold off on a kinship for now, probably until higher levels then look for a kinship who needs someone who will be playing reasonable amounts but I could never (and dont want to ever) go hardcore on an MMO again.

Will hopefully pick up groups for Moria which I would love to see but I will just toddle along and see how things pan out. Want to enjoy the experience and see Moria stuff (not as fussed about Angmar) and Mirkwood as I love the Lord of the Rings books.

From what people are saying the game reminds me a little of Vanilla WoW at the higher levels where you have to get rep and put in a little effort and then enjoy the high content, sounds pretty promising :)

Will keep on going, up to level 14 now :D

Me and a friend just recently started again on Snowbourne, Any kins here willing to take us in maybe?

I'm playing a Hunter, He's playing a Runekeeper. Just got level 41 I think. :)

Where do you head at level 16ish?

Seem to have completed all the quests in the starter elf zone and looking to move on. Should I be aiming for Bree or is there somewhere more elf-focused?

Ta

Well at least now they let you update without having to subscribe first which means you can keep it uptodate.

I'm going to get a lifetime sub next time I play.

The graphics are amazing

yeah head to Bree, the epic books generally take you round plus there'll be quests to visit various areas. after the shire it's the lone lands and north downs, the mainly elf areas come later in levels - eregion and lothlorien in particular (though apologies I'm a bit rubbish with the names).

What are these? A few people seem to have mentioned book stuff

As you level up and Quest you take part in an Epic Quest chain that works alongside the actual story and background of Lord of The Rings. I won't spoil it for you but you meet all the famous characters and locations in solo and group instances, they are quite good fun.

Too add onto that, never mess up the order the books should be done and also don't help someone with a book quest you haven't done yet, it will spoil it for you.

yeah i agree with this in terms of volume 1 (now it is soloable) but for the later parts of volume 2 that require groups and stuff you might struggle (i've never finished vol 2)

The single most important thing about the epic quests is that completing the first lot (ie all the non-expansion ones) gets you the right to buy a white horse ;)

Yeah, you need a group for the later books, but for example, if you're on book 1 and someone asks you to do book 2, don't do it.
