Starting to rethink my future.

geez everything computing is getting the thumbs down... i thought computers were supposed to make us happy ?
I think that's because a lot of people choose it for the wrong reasons. When it comes to choosing a degree a lot of people think "I'm quite good on computers, I'll do computer science" maybe without that much thought put into what it actually involves.

I'm doing it and although I'm only in my first year, I can't imagine changing my mind. I think it's great and I'm certain it's what I want to do with my life.

Basically, if in doubt, don't do comp sci.

I think one of the majors things that helped me into looking for a new career is my placement. Well, the people who worked in the IT dept anyway! I've decided i don't want to turn out like them ;)

Have done both - but not at degree level (as jobs)

And Mech Eng is so much more fulfilling and enjoyable. I really cant see why anyone would even consider computers or IT stuff now, you really need to switch your head off for that sort of stuff (well at least I find it soul destrying and brain numbing) - When I did the IT/Comp stuff I couldn't wait to get home from the office and get back into real life and not my nerdy PC geek work mode.....Each to their own though, and which ever one you choose, whos to say you will not wish it was the other in 10 years time like me ;)

I've enjoyed my computing jobs where i was working for small design consultants though. Really i think it's as much to do with the company / people as it is with the actual subject. If you work with people who aren't very similar to you, and who you don't want to be anything like, or for a company that you don't really like, then you're going to hate it!

i work in engineering, have done for over 20 yrs, in aerospace, the thing is the world of engineering has changed a lot in that time and its got a lot better to be honest. More powerfull computers and programs are making the technical side a lot more interesting and allowing much more complex analysis than used to be the case.
Unfortunately though, if you want interest do engineering, if you want money do something else.
Personally, as you spend most of your life working i think you should enjoy it, although i get really jealous of all those bankers driving around in their bmws and mercs.
I do feal the wind of change though and maybe engineerings becoming beter recognised. slowly.

You need to try and imagine what you could spend all day everyday doing for a long long time.
I was into programming but i thought the it bubble would burst and engineers would always be reqd, but who knows.

anyway good luck ;)

thanks for that.
im kind of starting to look forword for my future job as a engineer (hopefully)

anyway i need more comments from people who does computer system engineer!!!
