steam account stolen help :(

This is why i refuse to use any online digital games service, i hate steam with a passion, at least my retail games cant get hacked.

Its not hard to keep your details safe tbh, Ive not heard of anyone losing thier Steam account who hasnt either given their details to someone or has followed a dodgy link to an imitation Steam login. Infact Im quite surprised how often it crops up on here.

Also what the hell do these idiots get out of account stealing? they cant sell anything on and in every single case Ive seen the account was returned to the owner upon providing proof of ownership. Seems like a massive waste of time and effort for the thieves :s.

Good for you. All i can say is your paranoid in the extreme. People who lose there steam account generally did so by there own stupidity rather than malicious intent.

You can still recover it through Steam so long as your email address still has proof of purchases made from it i think. It isn't that hard to get it back, the only problem is if you don't do it quickly and they get caught by VAC. Valve outright refuse to change anything related to your VAC standing either because they can't or because it would cause too many problems with people wanting it changed.

Side note i'd forgotten about verification, i'm sure last time i tried it didn't work so i didn't bother. Done it now and verified. Helps that i'm paranoid about my Hotmail account, i've changed the password 2 times in the last few months.

They just sell the entire account (ie login details) for a fraction of it's value.

First of all, you'll get your account back, the only thing you can do is email them asap and hope it happens before they cheat on your account. One of my mates had this and he was lucky enough he got his account back with VAC in good standing ( it still is after months). Then again he only had TF2 and L4D not CSS which many want to cheat on...

2ndly, thanks to whoever mentioned verified email addy's, didn't see that feature before, it's a good feature imo :).

I had mine hijacked, last year, i emailed steam, attaching email proof of purchase of the orange box, i had my account back 2 days later.

Good luck.

Indeed, I know someone from OcUK got his account stolen too thanks to phising a few months ago (i think it was) and he got it back pretty quickly.

Its just a case of getting on with it and not panicking. The most irritating thing that happens is you have to add friends back after they get deleted usually.

so basically if they cheat on my account i loose all of my games anyway?

You don't lose a thing for cheating (technically), you just can't play on VAC secured servers if it blocks you completely which is only a problem for some online games. I think thats only for serious and prolonged cheating, at the worst you'd probably just get a message on your account that states you've been in trouble with the system. It can't be removed obviously.

Not that anyones saying it WILL happen if you get hacked... its just a possibility.

You don't lose any games, you're just on the cheaters blacklist ( IF he cheated)...
You can still play on non VAC servers after...

But it doesn't necessarily happen... You'll see when you get your acc back.

As for a password, may I suggest picking a harder one, never typing it anywhere but in your steam client, and verifying your email addy...

My password for steam is sophisticated because there's a lot of my money in there:

0xx!xxXX00xX0x0xx!

With 0 being numbers, X caps, x normal chars, ! special chars.
In different order ofc :p.

i will do but how the hell do you remember your password

Surely you can prove it's yours just by the fact steam have credit card details of purchases you made. So (if you used your card) -- they KNOW YOUR NAME?

You can say 'Look -- every purchase has been made by someone using a card with exactly my name - isn't it reasonable to presume it was me not 'Johnny Thief' who'se suggesting it's his account?'

??

Just verified my account. Hadn't thought to do it before. I guess it can't harm to have a different password for Steam and your email address. My Steam password is also unique to Steam and a mixture of words and numers. It wouldnt get cracked unless I gave it out to someone...never going to happen. Although it does happen a lot it would seem!

Really glad i stumbled accross this thread, I've had my account since steam first started and have about 100 games and spent loads of money. I to never new about the verification thing (done it now) Valve should make users more aware of this.

Mine got hacked about a year ago. Sent them multiple proofs that i owned and bought the games and they got my account back to me.

Fortunately the hacker hadnt cheated on any of my online games, otherwise id have been VAC banned, which id be gutted about because iv got a low steam id.

Your lucky in a way, because its monday which means you wont be waiting for a response over a non working day.

Few suggestions for when you get it back:
- Do a virus/trojan scan, chances are you may have a key logger on your pc thats logged down key presses.
- Validate your account with your email address.
- Use a strong password, more than 8 chars, Capitals, numbers, letters.
- Use different passwords on both your email and steam account.

I know how bad it feels when you cant access your steam account, but hopefully you will get it back soon.

Don't matter how sophisticated a password is if someone enters it into dodgy page or link ;)

And most people who had there steam account stolen is because they entered there steam user name & password into a dodgy page/link..
