Steam Christmas Sale is Underwhelming?

I think most of you are too spoiled :)

As somebody who can't buy many games (family = not much time/money for gaming) I've loved this sale just as much as the previous ones. I remember having to go into town to get the game I want, and going to all the stores to see who had it cheaper. The fact I can just sit stuffing my face with turkey while I browse/download/play in a matter of minutes is totally awesome.

Yeah, if you own every game ever made (and only actually play a fraction...) you're going to struggle to find much. Don't be disappointed with Steam - be disappointed at your lack of a life :D

I've been PC gaming since 1992 or so.

You never had to go to a shop even back then. There were mail order game companies, and they were cheaper than going to the store.

All you needed was their advert/price list, which was in any number of gaming magazines (which most of us bought for the reviews!)

I always buy atleast 2 games, none so far this year except for the THQ Indie Bundle. DOTA 2 has had me occupied, but nothing really takes my fancy.

Should've bought Sim City when it was £2.50, hope they drop it again.

I've got everything already. Was only really interested in Dishonoured and Deadlight but can't be bothered to get them as I have games I bought in last years sale I still have not played. The sale is not underwhelming, you just need to find the hidden indie gems, rather than busting your money on AAA rehashes.

I did treat myself to Sleeping Dogs for xmas, but bought it in the MM.

It "seemed" liked in previous sales, it was a 50% off across the board and there was a "good" chance of it bumping up to 75% off before the end of the sale. This sale seems to only do a 25% off with an "ok" chance of getting 50% off, rarely 75% off...

I started buying games in the mid 80's ;)

My point was that we've become used to getting digital content with no effort. We have almost limitless choices to get games, music, movies and books pretty much instantly now. All that's left to moan about is what's not in the Steam sale :) I would take 2012 over any pre-Steam era, thanks! I think it's awesome these days.

I want to rewrite what I said in the OP.

This sale isn't as bad as all that...its just incredibly difficult to find the deals I want.

I'm interested in serious sam 3, how did I come to know it was on a 75% deal? I TYPED ITS NAME IN THE SEARCH BOX. I mean this is so glaringly bad on steams part, it clearly needs to be refreshed to be made much simpler to find games and when they're on offer.

I also want the tomb raider collection, how did I find the tomb raider collection? This is so long winded its unbelievable - I typed tomb raider into search, clicked a tomb raider game and the collection was in packages included with this game at the bottom. How ****poor of steam.

I really think steam needs a complete design overhaul, the amount of games on it is now too much for the current design to be of much use to finding the games everyone wants.

Its got a reccomended section but that seems to be do with what my friends are playing more than anything else.

Valve pull your bloody finger out this is a mess.

I think I'd actually prefer if steam store was just a website, and only the library was part of the application.

Steam would be much better imo if it had the space to breathe on a website with a proper layout, so we can find games we want.

I'm still hoping that torchlight 2 will get a 50% or 75% off at some point. I have not seen it on flash deals yet, if it doesn't I will just pick it up with the 25% off.

First reply in the thread pretty much covers it, I have over 500 games on Steam not to mention more on retail and other DD platforms...

I'm sorry but that is actually really sad. I actually pitty you that you've spent that much money on games when there is so many more things in life that you could do with your time and money.

torchlight 2 is very much a 75% deal or nothing for me and I am actually really disappointed it's not come up yet as it really should be a solid bet.

Nah - 449 are unplayed :D

It's just the same old, same old. Games have come out of their heyday phase where everything that can be done has been done, many years ago. Most games now are just rehashes. Once you've seen one, you've seen them all. The mid-late 80's and 90's were good times for gaming. Things pretty much deteriorated once the 00's hit.

I personally believe gaming is going to crash, pretty much like other sectors are doing. It's part of the big cycle that will naturally occur every 20 years approx. The 'current' gaming cycle actually should have crashed around 7 years ago (technically it did), it's just that it is trying to be artificially pumped up, again pretty much like everything these days that is being manipulated, which is why such little progress has been made. Unfortunately, greed took over like it did in the banking sector which is probably where many of the problems were stemmed from.

Finally, As the financial crisis gets a lot worse (which is guaranteed), every sector will get hit hard.

This is funny.

I agree with Eames about finding all that's on offer. Sometimes I'll read that someone has bought a game, yet I can't see it for looking. I think things be a little neater.

Valve should call it their Steam Stealth sale. Winners of the competition receive a copy of Thief Gold - 33% off. :D

This pretty much, 90% of people who are very active during the sales (purchasing or just checking) own libraries of hundreds of games, most of which they have never even played. The prices so far have been decent, it's just the selections of games, as stated before they are basically all cheaper elsewhere. However Dishonored, Borderlands 2, Hitman Absolution, Mark of the Ninja & Deadlight, which have to be the 5 biggest names of the last quarter of 2012 have all been on sale for huge price drops, and expecting the AAA titles to fall below £15 and the hottest Indie titles to drop below £5 is sheer greed, I paid £18 for Hitman quite some time ago and £22 for Borderlands 2, which were really great finds at the time but tbh, had I paid £30 and seen them drop this fast, I wouldn't care in the slightest, £30 is great value for money, let alone half that!

I was surprised Mark of the Ninja and Deadlight even dropped more than 25%, and if they dropped any more than 50% I'd of felt terrible buying them, £11 for both is rediculously good value.

So rather than sit around waiting for Steam to put something super cheap on the frontpage that you'll never play anyway, how about getting through the backlog you've built up? Tis what I'm doing.

The number of things I could do with that money is actually fairly limited - looking at my transaction history I've spent about £880 over 5 years, plus the activated codes bought elsewhere that I'd estimate come to around £100. So the cost of my Steam library is probably under a grand. During the same period, I've spent far more on a house, wedding, car, holidays, heck maybe more on eating out than I have on Steam
Spending a grand elsewhere probably wouldn't improve my life as much as a few years of gaming, true I could have spent half the money and not missed some of the games, but either way a few hundred quid isn't going to have a massive impact on my life.

Yes, there are many more things I could do in life with my time, but gaming is one of my favourite pastimes.
