Steam Christmas Sale is Underwhelming?

But I bet they make a hell of a lot more sales, and a lot more profit, it's not like they are selling a physical product, it's digital and costs nearly nothing to upload again.

But you make the assumption that people wouldn't buy it at full cost if it wasn't discounted, gamers have a long, long history of paying whatever they are told to for whatever product is being flogged to them.

Some of the steam xmas sales were very out of character for some of the big publishers in terms of offering low prices, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's coming to an end.

Publishers know full well they could not have any xmas sale at all and still sell their triple A games by the bucketload.

When I first knew about the STEAM sales it was exciting for me. Never had I seen games having 75% off, or anything of the sort. This might be because I had only looked at console games back then and those prices are sky high. I had never dreamed of buying a game for 2/3 quid.

Now I feel that will never pay more than 10 quid for a game. In fact, the highest ever paid games for me were CS:GO (just under €10) and BF3 (£10) [I don't consider FM, as I will be spending over 1k hours on that. Not bad value for €30].

Anyway, back on topic. Before, the STEAM sales were unique. You close to never had any websites that heavily discounted their games like STEAM. Now that more websites have joined in, it makes the sales less exclusive and less exciting.

There are many bad sales. Origin have only 50% off some of their games. I didn't even bother looking. 50% means nothing anymore. Put that up to 75%, then I might look.

TL;DR. Steam sales were exclusive, thus exciting. Everybody does them now, so they are not exciting anymore.

Your mum was underwhelming tbh OP :p

In all seriousness though, have spent less than 40p and that was as a gift...not complaining, saves me money and means I can get through more of my unplayed games.

Publishers may well be getting wise to the fact that a lot of people are now waiting until Steam Sales to make a lot of purchases, lets face it, whilst it's great for us to be able to buy a year's worth of games at 75% off, it's not great for the publishers.

well they are better off getting 25% of something than 100% of nothing ;)

First reply in the thread pretty much covers it, I have over 500 games on Steam not to mention more on retail and other DD platforms, so it is inevitable that they sales won't seem so impressive given that I will simply dismiss many of the deals. For example there was a Community Choice vote where I already owned all 3 games, so no matter what the discount, even 99% it wouldn't make any difference to me.

Go back to 2009/10 and I was buying stuff throughout the sales to fill up my collection, but now it is reasonably filled up I don't buy as much.... if I was a newcomer to PC gaming I'd probably be pretty happy and filling my boots. That said I do think the publisher packs have gone downhill a bit in terms of the prices being hiked up a fair bit (THQ aside).

Best thing I've seen in this sale is probably the Simbin Mega Bundle as I've not noticed that heavily discounted before.

I'm a bit underwhelemed because they seem to be repeating a lot of the deals, or allowing them to be choices in the votes, Sim City 4 was already in the sale, Batman has already been in the sale, borderlands was already in the sale. There's loads of games that could be in the sale that haven't been.

For me there just haven't been any games released this year that I haven't had to own at launch so when the Steam sale comes around there just isn't anything that jumps out at me. There are some great deals but all the ones I would buy I already own.

On the plus side it has saved me money! :D

last year i paid £7.99 for football manager ( i buy them every year ) this year its it went to £15.99 as much as i love the games im not paying more than i did for the 2012 version

I think most of you are too spoiled :)

As somebody who can't buy many games (family = not much time/money for gaming) I've loved this sale just as much as the previous ones. I remember having to go into town to get the game I want, and going to all the stores to see who had it cheaper. The fact I can just sit stuffing my face with turkey while I browse/download/play in a matter of minutes is totally awesome.

Yeah, if you own every game ever made (and only actually play a fraction...) you're going to struggle to find much. Don't be disappointed with Steam - be disappointed at your lack of a life :D
