Steam Discovery Update - New Store UI/Layout - FINALLY

Overall I think it looks nice and it is nice to have some customisation! Must be such a headache to create a store front that caters for all gamers which also doesn't distract form the main object of the store, make money :p

That is true.

One thing I think they have missed an opportunity for (Or maybe it is something they are prepping)..

Is the ability for each category as a widget for which you could move around the store page/delete as you wish? Assuming was done in such a way not to conflict with commercial interests. As in, a New Releases widget is essential from a commercial point of view and should not be allowed to be deleted.

I'm guessing that is probably a snag when it comes to comparability. They need the store front to look the same of familiar on mobile, linux, mac,, windows in the client, on the website, when you are logged in, when you are logged out and all manner of hurdles.

Something we may see later down the line but I don't think they want the store front to be too personal yet. Maybe with the likes of Steam picture etc but again Valve want to keep some control of promotion space as I know it costs a hell of a lot to be on the front page/featured :p

Wow. Is it THAT hard?

Agreed. Don't enjoy indie games. Very little depth. Gimme CS:GO, Football manager and Tropico please.
Actually, indie games don't tend to offer much breadth - tend to be very tight & focused, where AAAs usually provide a much broader experience to aid their appeal to a wider audience.

Depth is debatable, and varies a lot between titles. Dwarf Fortress is very deep indeed, for example.

I'm not convinced that Tropico isn't an indie game anyway, though (?)

Indie isn't a genre, it isn't a means to classify what sort of game you'll be playing, outside of the developers aren't beholdent to a publisher (hence the term "independent") so to say you don't like "Indie" games isn't particularly sensible.

Maybe, but I havent, and they're not the kind of games I enjoy. I'm perfectly entitled to that!

You are entitled to that, but your Steam profile shows you played Torchlight for 54 hours...?

That is "Indie".

Of course everyone is entitled to their own tastes but to say "I do not like Indie" in this day and age, is a very blanket term which is often used incorrectly.

Alright, im not going to argue semantics with you, you know damn well what i'm talking about as you already pulled me up on my use of "bedroom-made". Torchlight made by a breakaway team of Blizzard developers is not in the same category and you know it, so dont play the fool.

But when people use "indie" in the way the guy did, that's exactly what they're doing. It either shows he doesn't actually get what "indie" means, or he hasn't really thought about it properly.

The point I was trying to make is that if "Indie" games were able to be segregated from the store, does that mean "Indie" game like Torchlight would not get as much exposure, meaning good "Indie" games do not get the sales they deserve as some will "block" "Indie" games from visibility?

If any of that makes sense?

My intention was not to irritate you and I apologise if I did so.

I am not saying every Indie game is awesome (Some are however, very awesome) but by the same token, neither are many AAA titles so do we have a "AAA" block too? It is VERY murky.

Oh I get what it means. I went through the STEAM indie category, and found 5 games tops I would be interested in playing. I have played my fair share of indie games, and I have not enjoyed the vast majority of them.

This isn't because it's a genre though, it's because "indies" being independent, can release utter crap and don't have anyone to answer to.

There will be developers on there that are releasing very good games that won't be listed as "indie". Valve's games are "indie". Oddworld is "indie". Their latest game, Abe's Oddysee New 'n' Tasty, is "indie". Kalypso games (Tropico), they're "Indie". Sniper Elite V2, "indie" too. Tripwire Interactive - Killing Floor, also "indie".

So to say you don't like indie, is ludicrous.

Besides what would be the point of showing only AAA games on the steam store front page? Those games by their very nature have massive advertising budgets and get tons of press. It is unlikely in the extreme that the first time you would hear about the next AssCreed game is on the Steam front page.

Also this sort of thing is what the new curation stuff is supposed to be for. Find some curators who share similar tastes and use them to find stuff you might like.

I kept scrolling down till I was told that due to my interest in comedy games (never heard of one) that I would probably be interested in a battlefield game.

However it did point me in the direction of other free to play games since I've been playing Firefall recently.

Steam needs bringing into 2014 as it is showing it's age, especially when you look at how far origin has come in the last 2 years.
That’s true so why have they just taken a 10 year step backwards? What a horrible badly design layout. Why is it so many websites no longer design for high resolutions? Fixed width UIs are crazy in today’s age of 2k and 4k resolutions. Over 50% of the screen is empty at my default resolutions and 75% of the screen empty if you run at 4k. That's a stupid design move. Who wants at tiny strip in the middle of the page? I bet not many.
