Steam IS coming to OS X

I know i can just have bootcamp but it's a pain in the arse. WoW is great and i play it a lot due to it being on my primary and only partition at the moment.

If this doesn't require re-purchasing my collection of Half-Life titles in a Mac-friendly version then I can't wait to play my way through the series again

I can't see how they'd justify charging again for the games tbh.

Shame I've given my Steam account to my brother when I gave up gaming and bought my MBP :(.

I have been keeping a close eye on this as i have always wanted a mac, but lack of games has kept me away.
If valve do release a new source engine making use of openGL, think of the amount of games that could bring to mac not to mention the mods etc built on the source engine.

Gah, sorry Mac OS X people, but this is just more distraction from them doing Half Life 2: Episode Three. :p

EDIT: Confirmed that all Source titles will be playable on either system for one price.

"Our Steam partners, who are delivering over a thousand games to 25 million Steam clients, are very excited about adding support for the Mac," said Jason Holtman, Director of Business Development at Valve. "Steamworks for the Mac supports all of the Steamworks APIs, and we have added a new feature, called Steam Play, which allows customers who purchase the product for the Mac or Windows to play on the other platform free of charge. For example, Steam Play, in combination with the Steam Cloud, allows a gamer playing on their work PC to go home and pick up playing the same game at the same point on their home Mac. We expect most developers and publishers to take advantage of Steam Play."

And thus the reason they moved to WebKit.

It is, but if you have no requirement to play on different computers far and wide then the flakiness it brings is unwelcome.

I'm always having to re-tweak my settings because they're not being persisted to their 'cloud' half the time, and that's playing on a single computer!

So completely official now then, and more announcements coming.

* licenses are cross platform, so no need to rebuy the Valve catalogue if you have already
* Portal 2 will be getting a simultaneous Mac and Windows release
* cross platform multiplayer for Mac and Windows
* cloud save games will work cross platform Mac and Windows
* Steamworks for Mac will have feature-parity with Steamworks for Windows
* Source has been extended to support OpenGL, and Valve are contributing to the standard
* Everything ships in April

That's pretty awesome actually, they seem to have every box on the wishlist checked. Setting a good example.

For geeks maybe. I'm sure Mac owning gamers will be pleased regardless.

It's not from a geeks perspective although a Mac certainly needs all the help it can get with game performance ;) If game developers just slap something around their Windows games it speaks volumes about how much they care. If game developers don't start to care how can anything change? All games are still written for Windows using Direct3D.

Reading further Valve have put OpenGL into Source so everything runs at full speed on Mac. IMO this is incredible news! Not only is this a major start to moving away from the Microsoft-only Direct3D but it has the potential for Linux gamers to join the party too.

Having Blizzard and now Valve on the Mac will make other developers take a much bigger look at the platform. Much more importantly: using OpenGL.
