Steam Link and Steam Controller now available to Pre Order

BO3 for me is just slightly on the unplayable side because of the speed of the game. Graphics are fine. It's probably a mixture of TV, powerline and my poor skills that make it harder. I play fine in front of the PC though.

Anthony.

Was that SP or MP? I've played through a fair bit of the campaign on the link, and it was absolutely flawless.

I wouldn't try it in MP though :)

Wired powerline AV1200 with transfer of around 2-300Mbps. Not sure about hardware coding, most likely default. What would you suggest?

Similar set up to me then mate, im on powerline adapters to virgin hub and pc not sure on the spec. Graphics card is a gtx 970 with shadow play enabled as i heard this makes the hardware encoder kick in?

Turn off shadowplay. You need the encoder doing its thing for the link, but if you have it doing shadowplay then you've got it doing two things at once, or possibly just the shadowplay and not the encoding for the link. Anyway. Go to the settings in steam, then in home streaming, then there's ticky boxes in there for hardware encoding.

Really? Ok will turn it off. Its on but set to manual so isnt actually recording etc but near when the link released i read this was the way to do it! Either way its worked really well so if turning it off makes it better thats great

Thanks

Right, improved my experience markedly by ensuring Steam using Intel QuickSync encoding, my old i5-2500k I forgot had the embedded Intel HD capability, however there are no Win 10 drivers so I used the Win 8 ones, then I had to enable in BIOS , AND then detect display in control panel (this didnt work till I plugged an HDMI cable (connected to monitor) into the onboard HDMI port thereby invoking the embedded Intel HD driver.........upshot is from looking at the steam streaming logs I get this "Capture method set to Desktop DWM NV12 + Intel QuickSync D3D9" where I was getting this "Capture method set to Desktop DWM NV12 + libx264 main (4 threads)" which was much more of a performance hit.

Def running much better now tho weirdly intermittent high frame loss, up to 20% at one point.

It seems to differ game to game as far as input lag is concerned (even similar game types). FPS is a no go for me with it, but I noticed GTA 5 was playable but the witcher 3 was too aggravating.

Also the god damn thing keeps crashing my steam client on the PC!

Been getting some games start on pc but just show black screen on my TV. Played a little dirt 3 and had no problems. Hopefully they iron all the bugs out.

Anyone else had issues updating the controller firmware? Mine's on Oct 27 version and is working fine, but never updates? I'm connecting it to the PC via USB cable in big picture mode.

EDIT: Enabling Beta mode for Steam fixed it.

Got the latest assasins creed the other day (uplay) and added it as a non steam game. Launches fine via the link, looked promising but in game its really stuttery and the sound skips etc :( any fix for stuff like this or is it just as its not a steam game?

Gotta say I feel like a Beta tester. I wouldn't recommend buying this to anyone just yet.

I actually disagree. It still has some quirks that need to be worked out, but overall pretty happy with this box. Great for crunch gaming when friends come over and you can't be bothered to plug everything into your TV.

Cant get any of the metro games to play. Just black screen with sound. Battlefront is super laggy. mass effect sound and video work but xbox one controller does not. Mad max sort of works if you dont put it in full screen and dirt 3 works but has glitches every few mins.

I honestly would be embarrassed to show any of my mates this considering what its like.

Will try not running it through my AV receiver as may be the problem but I wont want to use it through my tv audio.

Sorry to hear about the issues you are having, i wonder whats causing it as other that a third part game on uplay, my experiance has been pretty much faultless

I assume you are playing via ethernet?

Let us know how it goes with out av reciever

If the Link UI is smooth, then it won't be the AV receiver. What are the network status messages telling you?

Pc is connected via ethernet through a gigabyte switch. I guess it maybe something to do with the encoding. I've heard you can enable quicksync on the cpu some how?

I love the steam link but I am thinking about selling the steam contoler I just can;t get to grips with it.

Easiest way to enable QuickSync encoding is to Opt-in to the Steam beta client. Then enter Big Picture mode. In Settings you will find an option to select which Encoder (AMD/ NVIDIA/ Intel) you want to use.

Valve are currently moving away from NVIFR & NVFBC (Shadowplay) to NVENC for the Hardware Encoding on NVIDIA cards. Its not quite complete so you might be trading one issue for another. Could be worth a try also.

The Steam beta client has been going through a rapid update cycle for around a month now. There is supposed to be an update mid-week (of this week) that stabilises performance and fixes a lot of bugs with In-Home Streaming.

i agree with samsung. most recent games are geeenerally ok. but play anything older and performance is all over the place. So much so I just cant be bothered with my link at the moment.

The controller is a pain in the backside as well, being tied to big picture. It means, if im playing on the PC, i have to launch big picture, then launch the game for the controller to work correctly. Non steam games are fun as well.

grr.

When they work, they work well though.
