Steam Link and Steam Controller now available to Pre Order

It sounds like the steam link is no better than an htpc or laptop with in home streaming tbh.

I've used the controller a bit, although I'm not allowed to properly use it til xmas. I really like it. It bridges a gap for me, and that's the main reason I got it. So I could use my htpc downstairs with all of my games, rather than being forced to just play pad compatible games. I've yet to try an fps, but that's not really sofa gaming for me. Games like civ and banished, telltale games (you always have to grab something in those QTE moments and a stick is rubbish compared to the trackpad), and the like have really been transformed for me. It's just a case of gaining familiarity and knowing which tool is going to be right for the job, rather than expecting it to be perfect for everything.

There probably isn't meant to be a difference but for me streaming to my HTPC was no where near as playable as the Link. Racers being the worse on the HTPC, input lag meant I was constantly correcting the cars direction until I crashed.

I didn't think it would help but for £40 i thought it was worth the risk and the steam link resolved that issue on day one.

Id say the Steam Link is far better than my HTPC for streamed gaming.

That's actually good to hear. It seems like the usual issues are still present but at least performance issues seem to be resolved

Got a link yesterday off ebay. Had a bit of occasional lag playing walking dead. Changed the settings from beautiful to fast and its been solid since. I didn't notice too much difference in image quality on my TV but I wouldn't mind tweaking the settings to see I can can beautiful or at least balanced working. This is on 600Mbit homeplugs.

Ive not seen any options for encoding anywhere. Where do I find these settings?

The latest betas for both the steam client and the steam link are worth signing up to. Big difference to me. Much better latency and picture quality.

Agreed however with the Link I now get random hanging and a frozen screen every few mins - audio and controls still working fine in the background

Right, spent an hour playing portal 2 with the pad just to see what an fps would be like. Not terrible, is my verdict, but not much better than an xbox pad would be. On the one hand, being able to snap my camera around quickly and with reasonable control was much better than a pad (especially after turning off the trackball setting), but I found fine aim virtually impossible as simply rolling my thumb on the pad slightly would skew my aim. So placing a distant portal on a small area became very difficult. I haven't tried using the gyro yet to work around this, but kinda wish I could just get that fine aim sorted. I'm tempted to try dropping sensitivity and turning on acceleration to allow for sweeping camera movement while preserving small adjustments

Turning on the steam Beta has allowed me to play a few games today on beutiful with only a couple of lag spikes. Played Grid 2 was nice a smooth.

Strange question but can you have two steam controllers connected for multiplayer/co-op?

Cant seem to find a easy answer??

Update from me - rolled back to the public build and my screen freezes are much less frequent and it recovers faster as well. Really want this to be up and running smoothly soon! :(

Started throwing it down outside and it seems to have made steam link unusable. Weather must be affecting my homeplugs though it was fine all weekend.

Pleasantly surprised how easily the Link was up and working. Games I’ve tried so far were fine too. Only thing is I can’t get used to the Controller at all. What sort of games work best?

I was thinking of just wetting a wireless keyboard and mouse instead or do people get used to the Steam Controller eventually? I tried some first person shooters, it works alright but it feels so wrong v k + m!

I was given a Steam link as a gift a week ago. My initial experience has been nothing short of brilliant.

Out of the box I had it connected to my network (gigabit lan), paired with 2 XBox 360 wireless controllers and into Steam big picture in a matter of minutes.

Since then it's been used...a lot!

Games I've tested that have worked with no issues whatsoever and using a 360 controller;

Rocket League, this game is fantastic local multiplayer split screen on a big tv.
Blops 3.
Shadows of Mordor.
GTA 5.
Sonic & All Star Racing Transformed.
Tony Hawks Pro Skater.
Pool Nation.
Trials Fusion.
Dirt Rally.
Star Wars Battlefront.
Beat Hazard.
Virtua Tennis.

The only slight issue I've had so far is with Fifa 16, other than that it's worked seamlessly.

I haven't been brave enough to buy a Steam controller yet, but I'm intrigued.

Tried mass effect and contagion last night. Mass effect would get as far as the main loading screen then the controller would stop talking to the game (still connext ed to the link though) and contagion would lock the link up, needing a hard reset.

Fun.
