As was the case with the Steam Deck, Valve is selling the Steam Machine via Komodo Station, an Asian reseller that serves much of South-East Asia, and as a result, it skips the reservation and lottery system that is currently in place on Valve's own Steam Store. While this doesn't combat issues...

You can't be serious the PS5 Pro is almost half the price compared to the Steam machine with controller.

PS5 Pro has higher spec in every area.

Valve are being Valve greedy but they know they will have a market which will just pay it.

Sony has a captive market and doesn't need to get the full amount they want when they sell you a PS5 Pro. The PS5 price is what you pay to be locked into Sonys shop.

Valve is selling a tweaked but essentially ordinary pc with a SteamOS installation.

There is nothing stopping you buying Valves Steam Machine, kicking SteamOS off, installing Windows and then using it as an office PC that never pays Valve another penny.

Except the part where they want full payment for what it costs up front.

Come to that, there's nothing stopping you buying a pc that's half the price of a Steam Machine with controller and installing SteamOS for free. What's that performance like.

I just don't get what the market is though, other than the crazy people that buy anything made by their favourite brand, even if it is rubbish/terrible value?

Don't most PC gamers/Steam fans and enthusiasts have a PC more capable/powerful than the steam machine?

If I had a more powerful PC I wouldn't want to play on far lower settings just so I can sit on the sofa and have this little cube by the TV.

If you have a gaming PC that is equal to or a bit worse than the Steam Machine, why spend nearly a grand on a side-grade at best?

For now. Hardware was manufactured months ago or longer when component prices were different. Sony has already announced prices will be rising because of course they will, everything is.

The Plug 'n' play console experience but without the closed environment, cash extraction conduit of console live subscriptions, whats so hard to understand? Prices weren't originally intended to be this high thats obvious.

It’s not for enthusiasts and people who already have a top spec gaming rig. Forget about those and you can see who will buy one.

It’s not terrible value either because here we are a few days later with barely any decent itx builds that are cheaper than it. never mind factoring in the cost to actually putting it together or support etc.

The above is making you assume only ‘steam fans’ will buy one.

I work with many people who buy the latest consoles (and tech in general) constantly and use them a few times a month. None of them would ever build a pc.

This is another tech thing for them people. They see the latest ‘trend’ pc games when doomscrolling on their top spec iPhone but are never going to stick a full tower in their front room. They’re never going to spend tens of hours looking at specs and compatibility and benchmarks. They want something they can just stick next to the tv and it be ready to go when someone says “what’s that” or “have you heard about this game”

but other people would. They would also like one for their partners/parents/kids so they can share their steam collection but not have to have another noisy/hot rig in the bedroom or front room

I haven't built or owned a powerful pc for 15+ years . Early this year I won a steam deck. In a similar way to how you think about the steam machine I thought I’d have no use for it and would sell it .

Turns out convenience > graphics

I’ve finished games on it that I could have played on my ps5 with better graphics/framerates while sitting in the same room my ps5 is in. I’ve also been working through games I missed over the last 15 years . Not many of those look great either.

I’ve spent far too much time this week weighing up the pros and cons and am actually not going to order one :p but I came very close. It’s only the pc parts prices in general stopping me from buying this or building an SFF. Hard to justify any of it at the moment

price already increased I was using the increased price when I compared from Sony own site.

Steam machine was first shown Nov 2025 it uses a custom mboard design so this machine would have been in the works for a long time before working with other partners meaning they would have already cut a deal for parts back then not like they are claiming only a month ago that is not how it works. (future stock is different so you would understand an increase later on)

I do not disagree likes of MS & Sony will have better buying power etc but come on common sense they are not getting 2tb ssd for the same price as 512.

The have even said they are making profit and tried to have a dig at consoles clamming they are losing on each unit which is a lie.

People are saying about closed eco system that is what steam is just the same as the consoles the only difference is they dont offer the subscription model as well.

Steam machine isnt plug&play the gaming nexus video did a good job even showing this. (You have to pay extra for the controller the lowest price model should have had it at that price point)
 
No direct audio outputs (aside from HDMI and Display Port) is a bit odd and rather restrictive, given the existing gaming monitor market. It looks roughly on par with the base PS5 or Xbox Series X for the kind of settings that can be achieved in games. Plus after seeing game benchmarks, I'm quite sure I could build a custom PC that would outperform it for less money (especially if AM4 / DDR4 based) - just doing so in small form factor would be a challenge. That just makes it look rather overpriced. I do find myself wondering where the market for a machine like this will be, and I can't see sales being particularly strong.

Edit: If you factor in some gaming laptops being available with much better GPUs and otherwise on par specs for similar money, it really makes you wonder who is going to buy one.

They seem to be buying the "reservation" rather than the product itself. Given the reservation emails have ZERO indication when you'll be offered the chance to buy a Steam Machine this seems utterly stupid, even for the brain-dead denizens of ebay....
 
I didn't try a steam machine in anyway.

Makes me think of the Steam Platform. I only have Quake 1 and 2 on there and nothing else.
 
Not sure where to post this but I made myself a fake Steam Machine from my Minisforum UM680. By which I mean, I installed SteamOS on it. I've wanted a console style TV based PC for a while and using Windows with a keyboard on my lap has always been cumbersome.

I've had this little PC for 3 years now (with Windows 10) and it has the AMD 6800U is a Zen3+ chip with a 680M GPU. It has 16GB of RAM (LPDDR5-6400) and 512GB of storage but I added a 256GB MicroSD card. It launched for $400 lol. I bought it for £329. It is the the size of two leather wallets stacked on top of each other:

Steam OS is a bit weird that it will first boot off a USB stick but go into a desktop like GUI environment. I guess running an OS from a USB stick is a linux-y thing. You then have to click on the install to install it onto the SSD. It's quite happy using an Xbox One controller.

It's performance is similar to the Steam Deck but at 1080p. I have a Steam Deck so I am familar with the interface and it is identical (as far as I can tell).
 
I just know I'm gonna end up playing with my Steam Machine for a few weeks before likely selling it on and trying to build my own Steam Machine...

i actually have the same device. currently sitting doing nothing. i may try steam OS on it. where did u download steam OS ISO?
