Steam - problems with downloads

Has anyone else had issues with Steam lately regarding very slow and downloads stopping?

Last night I had a mixture of new games and game updates to install (around 13). They would stop and then resume BUT they would also stop and then start downloading another game in the cue before completing the download. :confused:
 
Downloads were really slow for me last night, I only had four updates between 20 and 150mb and they didn't complete before i went to bed, they would usually be done within minutes.
 
It could very well be. I hve been having really poor internet for the last month or so. I did check and was getting 43mb/s via Ookla speed test last night.
 
If you're on Virgin they have been doing work for the 50-75mb upgrade the past few weeks. Apparently some things have been shut down while they do it meaning reduced service at peak times.

It's supposed to end on the 10th November (and if you ring up to complain you get a discount on your bill)

It would be weird only affecting Steam though, browsing and other downloading was fine for me last night.
 
I had exact same issues last night, I had formatted the PC and went to re-download GTAV and Warhammer Vermintide and I was having all sorts of issues, they wouldn't start and eventually once they did I was getting like a 3kb per second speed then would disconnect, was about 80GB I needed in total.

Left it over night and seem to have both downloaded and the speeds this morning where back to normal. very odd, definitely was steam only even thing else was fine.
 
I had problems with Steam last night as well, downloads were intermittently slow, sometimes they'd be going at 12Mbps and then it would drop to a couple of Kbps.
 
Mine is awful again this morning, tried three different servers including Sweden but I'm getting very poor download speeds, less than 1Mbps and the download keeps stopping, I don't think it's my connection.

If this downloads at normal rate, I guess the issue is with Steam and the servers.
 
I only joined steam last night and was trying to download a demo, im glad to know that its normally not as bad as that as i nearly uninstalled steam my demo dl was stopping and starting. Nothing wrong with my virgin speed.
 
The speeds are back to normal for me now, tried switching to the New York sever as almoststew mentioned above, not sure if it was a coincidence or not but it maxed my connection.
