Steam Summer Sale

You mean games that were released years ago (asides from a few indies) and they no longer make a profit on?

No longer make a profit?

If they're selling games for 75% more than during the sale then obviously there is profit involved.

They have no reason to sell at a loss as they are digital copies, not physical copies they need to shift.

The only thing these sales make me do is hesitant to buy games outside of the 'sales'.

Knowing that they'd willingly sell these games for -75% and -50% just makes me feel like I'm being robbed when I pay full price for something.

Minority or?

Not at all... but that's how Valve's entire business model for Steam works... You feel like you're "waiting for it to go on sale" when in a lot of cases the fact is you wouldn't buy it full price even if you didn't know sales existed... As well as grabbing a decent amount of what would otherwise be "lost sales" by reeling in all the users who buy in the sales, it also slowly breeds a false perception that a Steam sale game with 75% or whatever *must* be a bargain and leads to more impulse buying of other titles..... The numerous users of this forum with many hundreds of games many of which they will likely never play can attest to that :D

Of course they do, think about it.

They buy the keys from the manufacturers/distributors at X price. After time those items devalue, the same way a hard copy would, so they need to cut their losses and get rid.

Do the publishers not work with Steam to set prices? I can't believe Valve spends millions stockpiling digital keys just to put them on sale at a specific time and price. I think that's far to old school. Also, what if they ran out of keys

Who buys full priced games from Steam anyway?

I will always use GMG or another key site for new titles. Only ever buy from Steam when there's a sale on.

Yep same here, I don't often buy games at release but when I do I use GMG as they usually have a 20% code you can use. I know prices come down but for something I don't want to wait for such as BioShock Infinite, getting it for £22.50 at launch is pretty damn good.

I did a complete playthrough of HL2 and its episodes a few weeks ago. Its still awesome :)

Interesting, I still have 1 plus dlcs on steam, when I set up this pc it was the first time I installed steam in years forgot I had an account.

Never ever played 2 though!

Think I am just going to get half life 2 none of the episodes, orange box seems best but I am unsure how much I will play, can always pick up the others at the next sale!

No! Buy all 3! HL2 ends on a cliffhanger! You wont get the complete (or as complete as it gets without episode 3.. ) story if you dont get the episodes!

You dont need to get the Orange Box. Episodes 1 and 2 are only £1.49 each! BARGAIN! BUY THEM!!!! *foams at the mouth* :o

I agree but the Orange Box could still be worth it if you also don't have Portal, which is well worth a go as well

Well yeah but if you only buy HL1 and HL2 then 1 + 2 = 3 so you'll be transported to an alternate dimension where you get to play HL3 (not that you'll remember any of it). Only once enough people start buying HL1 and 2 together will it be released from the dimension it's trapped in, and allow us to bask in its glory.

Ooooooo, totally forgot about HL2 and the episodes... Might install the cinematic mod and play through them again haha.

Absolutely agree, but if you didn't want to spend that much, the episodes individually would save you a couple of pounds.

Talking saving money, your speaking my language!

Not that I'm tight or anything..........

Thanks for the advice people, think I will buy 2, plus the episodes!

Purchased and installing! I await the next sale update now.

Someone said earlier about FM and not having played it in years, I am the same, I am avoiding it though, If I start I will only play that and my other games will be wasted!

Haha it is still far and away my most played game ! Been a fan ever since the Commodore Amiga days !

On topic - is Defiance good , i quite like the look of it ?
