Hi

Wondering if anybody else find steam support to be pretty poor.

I had logged a query for a relatively simple question

Had tried to activate a game using the wrong key and accidentally triggered the error that i already had this game.

My query was "Had I wasted the key or is it ok to be used again on a different account". Manage to find the answer here thankfully.

The point though steam person didnt even bother to read my question. He just told me " you cant activate a game you already have??? and then finished off with a generic answer to a link that really had no relation to my original question and then closed my case.

I re-opened my incident again and he again replied We can't help you, and thank you for using steam support and closed the case again.?? lol?

Really??? It a yes or no answer really and i dont think her bothered to read or understood the question? really frustrating :(

Steam support are generally pretty damn poor, yeah. If more people had to use them Steam wouldn't have as good a reputation as it has currently.

Yeah, Steam support is pretty terrible which is a shame as the overall service Steam provides is great but really bought down by the CS team. Funny thing is that Gabe himself apparently helps people out if they E-Mail him queries, maybe he should get a better CS team and save himself the effort haha.

That was my thought exactly, I have no problems with their service infact they are probably the best out there.

it was my own fault at the end of the day. I bought a few codes and the retailers didnt tell me which was which. So had to find out for myself through trail and error.

I just get the feeling he didnt really follow the question. Maybe english is a 2nd language or something :(

Steam support is pretty garbage if you're in semi urgent need of assistance, also a joke some way people get treated with banned accounts that in a rare case aren't their fault.

Unfortunately there is always going to be problems with a service supporting tens of millions i'd imagine, thankfully it isn't on a massive scale and there haven't been disasters like other companies.

I'd say 5 million concurrent users most times during the day they are doing reasonably well, although understaffed imo but they are opening in Europe afaik.

At OP, as for the 'you can't activate a game you already own' that would mean no the key hasn't been used, granted its a crap answer.

Only time I've ever contacted them is to cancel pre orders because they're available for less elsewhere.

They ban you for complaining?

No they've banned people from trading (not huge but many have invested 1000's in it) and some people should've seen it coming when they get too good to be true deals but others have been banned innocently due to receiving items that have been stolen/duped I believe.

It was also a year or two back I read about someone losing their account unfairly but I can't remember the reasoning exactly and valve support were garbage, but most people suggest head to small claims, Valve won't show and you can get however much you've spent on it. (Never heard of anyone doing this in theory, I imagine due to the fact a very small number have had severe issues that weren't deserved)

They also let me have a refund, although I did regret my purchases immediately, surprised I got it :p

Turnaround can be a couple of days in my experience. Like others say, it's the only thing letting Steam down. Fortunately I've only ever had to deal with them twice.

I'm definitely not the only one this has happened to but I lost my first account due to a paypal chargeback (that I didn't initiate... sigh@paypal). I tried for a month to sort it out but eventually gave up, initiated chargebacks on anything I could and then used the refunded money to set up my new account with most of the same games. Woot :/ This was quite some time ago and if the same happened today there seem to be more things in place/known steps to resolve the issue. That said, I simply don't use paypal for steam purchase any more. It's not worth the hassle.

I use steam all the time and pretty much only purchase games that will register on it (aside from some indie titles). The reason I mention this is that I want to make it clear that I'm not one of those people that hate steam before I say that it really doesn't matter in the slightest how many customers they have or how understaffed they are...Steam support are still pretty awful. I don't blame any of the individuals working there for this. It's simply a failing of steam as a service.

Sorry I misread as 'if more people had to use Steam', yes if more had to use the support I'm sure it'd change pretty quick :), also a good sign they don't.

Also it is awful Valve allow paypal to be used and situations like that I arise, that was the situation I was referring to I heard about

OP I've done that once before, already had a game then registered another key in error, it asks if you want to install the game, but it's talking about it as if you want to reinstall using the original key.

It doesn't (or didn't in my case) add the second key to my account and I registered it under the correct account (my brothers) later that week. He's still using the game.

Yeah. I've heard of at least one other person on here that had the same issue. They had it a few years later and I think they resorted to emailing Gabe...who actually sorted the issue out, which is pretty awesome.

As you say, thankfully it's rare that support have to be called upon. Definitely a good thing :)

I've never needed to contact them so far so I can't comment, I would bet that the vast majority of people have the same experience and therefore Valve don't see it necessary to upgrade their support. Makes business sense I guess.

I'm sure when I have to contact them and it goes belly-up I'll change my tune :p

That's all i wanted to know. :)

As mentioned Divine and a few others mentioned this already but surprised that their support didn't follow.
