Steam UI Update

So i wanna try the beta, but if its a pain is it possible to go back to normal without much hassle?

:D

Am having problems with being able to right click on a game in the store and choose to open it in a new window....

Am praying steam fixes this problem very soon..

That easy, lol why did i expect it to be so much harder than that? :p

Well seems good so far, no slowness, crashing etc. Yet...

Sorry - I'm a bit late to the thread, so all this has probably been discussed earlier:

1) Made me redownload all the CoH expansions for no particular reason... criminal waste of bandwidth.

2) No "compact view" which shows just the games in a thin bar. Forced to endure BLOAT!

3) Games list doesn't remember viewing preferences - I want list view and installed games only, but every time I start Steam it defaults back to all games in detailed view.

Haven't actually played any games through it yet, so those are my only gripes so far. Other than that, I like the new look, especially the download manager.

No compact view - no deal

I went back to the old UI after a short while.

As much as I like it and I think its a step in the right direction there is too much wasted space, bloated parts and it seems to be too 'busy' compared to the old interface.

Minor problem of the in-game overlay crashing with BS1/2, ME2 & MW2 for me but I'd assume that will be sorted out on release.

Anyone tried paying for a game via Paypal in the new UI

It just doesn't work for me - I had to gho back to the old UI just to pay for a game

the new UI look may not be too bad but the functionality sucks big time

No compact view - no deal

THIS. I have no idea how stupid Valve has to be to not include compact view. THat is BASIC functionality, even for beta. I want steam to be as compact as possible, to have as small footprint as possible, to eat up as little resources as possible. So far this beta is a step into shatty direction in every single point, dammit.

Does it really matter if Steam uses a couple of MB compared to say 900kb? I do like it - I like the nice big game icons which you can resize. Works fine for me. I would like a different colour scheme on the icons (perhaps black and white / grey) for the none-installed games and that's it.

I don't think it's an MB size rather a pixel size.

Sure it's fine on dual or triple screen setups but on my laptop which is 19x12 it sits there eating at least a 1/4 of the screen with no way to go back to the slimline game list for the corner of your screen unless you go back to the old interface.

If they can get a compact view sorted while they're crunching bugs then I'd be all for it, as would I think a number of users.

I don't really get what the problem is with the size.

You can just minimise it to the system tray and launch games you've loaded before from the icon on the task bar (on Win7).

Why would you want to sit looking at your games list all the time anyway? The chat windows and the friends list can be opened independently of the main window and are the same size as before.

I think Valve are just testing the water with the lack of a compact games list. They wouldn't get rid of it completely.

And it would be a big change to Steam if they did get rid of it completely. It's not necessarily bad. It's just a radical change as it's always been available before.

I'm repeating myself now.

This is what I was referring to. I don't understand people who keep moaning about an app that runs in MB's and prefer something that runs in KB. Thats fine if you have 512MB memory, I can understand it then, but most people on this forum have 4GB+. I have 8GB and now, unless my performance suffers badly, I don't care how big or small the app is as long as it's functional for my needs.

But if you can't see why it should consume more memory it's usually a sign of poor or rushed programming. Not optimized, getting bloated etc.

Rather than make an new thread I thought I might as well ask in here, I'm about to format my system and upgrade to windows7, instead of re-downloading everything I'd like to backup my steam folder, now I just want to confirm what I have to do, I backup the 'steamapps', install windows7, then install steam again, then move my 'steamapps' folder back across right ?

that should work... but is barely relevant to the thread :D
