I haven't seen any threads on this topic, GTA San Andreas has been updated on Steam, it looks like they have just replaced it with the new XBOX 360 version of the game and got rid of 17 music tracks from the sound track.

They have also got rid of the 1920x1080 resolution according to a lot of forums around the internet, since the update I haven't really been able to play it because it just keeps crashing. Also the current saved game files will not load with the new version, a lot of people have complained about the same thing.

So they have essentially deleted a perfect good working version of the game and replaced it with a broken version with less features.

The reason they did this has something to do with the licenses for the music expiring. It doesn't affect me too much because luckily I still have my boxed copy of the game.

How do you guys feel about a version of your game that you paid for being deleted from your hard drives and replaced with a cut down version. I think it is time for some regulation and clarity about what online services such as Steam can get away with.

Quite angered really and uninstalled it asap. I still have my boxed copy like you luckily.
The update came out of no where and surprised a lot of fans on Steam. The savegame thing is a real deal breaker.

If content that you paid for can be removed from your game without notice, what does that hold for future titles I wonder?

Might be something to do with the licenced music in the game as the reason it's been replaced.

I know that the Steam version of GTR 2 removes Porsche and Ferrari from the original game due to licencing issues. Even if you add your original GTR 2 serial key to Steam.

Even so, it's not really on that game saves don't work.

Totally agree, there has always been criticism of Steam , Origin and Uplay, but I have never really joined in with any criticism of those services.

I understand that the music licenses has run out and they can no longer distribute the games as they were, but that has nothing to do with what is already on my hard drive. I just think that this is a step too far.

The way I read it, they haven't even updated it with the Xbox 360 graphics improvements.

More like the added Xinput to an older build of the PC game, and took out 17 music tracks at the same time?! Hence Version 1.0 with no 1080p support.

Feels like its just another way for publishers to squeeze blood out of a stone as far as profits go, how long before they turn around and release a DLC pack which reverts the game to "pre-cut down"

Wouldn't put it past them.... this sort of nonsense is why the gaming industry is heading (at least in my opinion) towards an 80's style bust

Yes they need to make money but the customer is why they aren't just another defunct noname that went bankrupt, you can't treat them with contempt by acting this way... it just seems like the customer that actually supported the developer by buying instead of asking dr-google is being shafted

I should imagine that in order to keep the game for sale in Steam, everyone has to be running the same version. Hence why previous owners have had their version changed to the one that they now have to sell on Steam to fulfil their new licence agreement.

The only other option would be to remove the game from sale on Steam.

Yes, looking it to it further, this is exactly what they have done

Grab the Audio folder from a older copy also grab the gta-sa.exe. Replace those on the updated game and steam will not ask you to update and you can carry on as normal. How you get the Audio folder and .exe is down to you :)

I'm sure they could have re-listed it as a new game to get around this if they wanted to ie. the existing entry is de-listed to stop further sales but existing owners can continue to use/download it. This new version could then be listed as a new game.

They should have just left the game alone it was fine as it is.... Luckily I still have a physical copy

Jesus, Rockstar is so bloody inconsistent with their PC stuff. I have this game on Steam (got it a while back in the huge GTA bundle) but it looks like i'll have to have a word with my good friend Mr. P. Bay for the actual game I paid for.

^^ Can't blame you... just tried to log into my ncsoft account - 4 years ago after a system change I was unable to upgrade my account - support said it was a known issue and a priority to fix - 2 weeks later I got bored of waiting and moved onto other games, just tried to login again thinking of having a whirl at one of my old games on there and... EXACTLY the same error... 4 years on and they haven't fixed it incompetent ****** ******. The list of developers/publishers I will buy games from any more dwindles month on month :S

Another reason why i'll always stick to my boxed version...And SAMP being the main one.

Amen to that, I spent days modding this game ages ago and always ran into issues with the steam version for some reason, dug out my old boxed version and all the mods worked a treat. Still a classic imo.

This is exactly what they did with Outrun when the Ferrari licence expired. If Ferrari are cool with their licence being retained for those who paid for the game at the time, then why aren't the musicians?

The musicians probably have no say or know about it. Will be the labels they are signed up to after every last pence they can get.
