Anybody else think this is rubbish?
I've got 2 games on my pc that use it and both of them took ages to download the update through steam. One took well over 2 hours,i've just tried another and it said it'd take 1 day and 4 hours!
Is there any way to make it faster or make it work better?

?? Never been a problem for me.. Have you checked your internet speed?

Alternatively, you can pop down to your nearest retailer, get parked, take a chance they have it, come home, install... download and install patches.. then play.. Should take you best part of the day :)

No.

What is your download bandwidth? What games are you talking about, and by update do you mean download the entire thing?

Updates take a few minutes.

Edit: Beaten thrice!

The game is dawn of war 2.
I've got the disc, installed, steam says it's downloading updates and then says it's gonna take over a day.
I'm only on sky's very rubbish basic package at the moment but it's still 2 meg download so a day seems a very long time:confused:

I've had issues with Steam but you can't blame them for your poor internet connection. 2 meg will give you approx 200kb/s download speed full whack and that's if it's running properly.

Have you tried maxing your connection out to see how fast it is? try downloading openoffice is usally a good way.

Open steam
File > Settings > Downloads

And make sure you've got the UK server selected (This will require a steam restart).

It's now working at a faster rate as I changed my settings thanks to iviv.Still 5 hours though.
One thing I don't like is being told I can't play a game due to not being able to connect to steam servers, which happenend the other day.

I think you just need new internets tbh, yours sounds broken

Best thing about Steam for me is it doesn't matter than I lost my CD/Box/Key for games like the original half-life, they are registered on my account and I can download and play them at any time if I want to.

As far as speed goes, I loaded up HL2 and CS Source in no time yesterday, probably not much longer than if I were installing from CD.

+1 for Steam
