Steelseries vs Razer

Lets discuss both :)

I'm interested in my customers perception of both the products and the brands.

Razer, although expensive, it looks amazing and it just works.

AND ITS BLUE !!!!!!!

The only product I have is a SteelSeries SP Gaming Surface, I've had it since time began and it still looks as fresh now as it did then.

i use both, i have a steel series mouse and a razer keyboard, the keyboard in itself is a really nice product but the keys are wearing off after mininmal use, the mouse again feels very rugged if not too big for my child size hands, again this has shown signs of wearing in that one of the buttons has stopped working and the coating has worn off the right mouse button.

To sum it up both make marvelous products but and it is a huge but, since they are aimed at gamers who will put them through hours of torture I think the materials and build quality are somewhat lacking for both companies. Whilst initially the build quality looks solid after the acid test of prolonged gaming it fails, and at the cost of these items i would expect them to out live my £3 mouse and keyboard which over roughly the same amount of time show no signs of wear and both have equally been used for gaming.

Which is a shame really since I expected a longer lifespan from these products considering the cost involved to own said items. If your willing to pay a premium and not expect these products to last a long time then they are great, I just feel they lack value for money in todays climate and once mine die and go to component heaven i will be replacing with cheaper and easier to replace products.

I have the Razer mamba and Steelseries Steelpad mouse mat.

The mamba seemed like a great mouse for the first few months, but the battery life is useless for long gaming sessions, and will quickly leave you scrabbling for the charging cord. The more demanding you are of the mouse in regards to sensor dpi and polling rate, the worse the batter life gets, I just leave mine plugged in all the time now, making the charging dock rather redundant. As for the build quality, over the months it has gathered many creaks, rattles and squeaks, particularly when using the left and right mouse clicks. It has got louder and feels like it is grating. Searching on Google for this shows it as a common problem where the lubricant doesn't last long enough. Not really good enough for a £120 mouse.

The steelpad has been in service about the same time as I thought it would last forever and be worth the £30. It has coped pretty well with my daily abuse, but the edge is starting to show signs of wear, and the fact that it needs re-oiling from time to time is a nuisance, I also think the oiling cloth is starting to dry out (even after being kept in its original sealed bag) and I have no idea where/how to replace this.

I guess my summary of both these is that for the outlay, I expected a little more, some of my cheaper peripherals like the logitech G15 (mk1) are still going strong despite a constant hammering, and my roccat kave headset has been subject to much more abuse under the wheels of my swivel chair but still acts as new.

In my experience, Steelseries make superior products. Never had an issue with them and have with Razer.

Hence why I currently use a Steelseries XAI mouse and a Steelseries 6G V2 mechanical keyboard. Bombproof (apart from the printed lettering on the keyboard).

Razer: Overpriced, poor quality (for the price), lots of pointless gimmicks.

Steelseries: Still overpriced, better quality (still not amazing), I prefer the ergonomics and aesthetics of Steelseries products but if you like paying for LEDs then your opinion may differ.

Also Razer like to waste money on useless overpriced **** like the Switchblade, Blade and Project Fiona rather than putting the ADNS-3666 in a decent mouse and improving their QC rather than going down the "I dont care about performance we must have MOAR DPIS AND LEDS!11"

I prefer SteelSeries. It feels better and the comparatively minimalistic design is more appealing to me. I'm past the flashing lights stage in my life. :p

I own the razer naga, have had zero problem over the year I had it's was used for 6 months of serious mmo gaming never let me down once. I use it on a steelseries mouse mat which as said before looks just as good now as it did a couple years ago. would buy product from both of them any time. But have always like the soft touch that razer have in there products.:D

Im with 5UB on build quality.

Razer I will never own as I end up wasting money on kit that doesnt feel right to me.

Steelseries I prefer however Ive just sold my 7G mech keyboard!

I personally prefer Razer products because their aesthetics appeal to me. However, I don't like their pricing or their support and drivers.

Hmmm this is what I forgot to state in my previous post. Steelseries definitely make the more simple, but quality product. No flashing lights and no gimmicks. Just good quality stuff, just the way I like it.

From the SS side I have a Steel Series Siberia in-ear headphones and Steel Series Siberia V2s. From the Razer side, I have a DeathAdder.

Well, both my SS items went bust on the microphone. Sound quality is pretty good on both of them but the mics are poor. Both microphones broke for me. The in-ear headphones + mic I didn't bother to RMA, as they were a bit cheap and the headphones were still good. The headset I decided to RMA, and they sent me a replacement. Mine was orange, and they sent me a black one, but for the change in colour, they added their soundcard. Not that I really need it, but it was good of them not just to send me a change of colour ONLY. The sound quality on both is amazing, although I haven't had tooooo many headsets so I can't compare.

The DA is good, bought it second hand from the MM. It fits my hand well, and up till now, I had no problems with it. I think the price for a new one is a bit too high, but the actual product is really good. Once again, I didn't use too many mice so can't compare. What I an say, is that I HATE using school computer mice, or any other mouse I come across :P

I'd buy from either. Not a fan of Razor mice though, they break quite a lot if ur unlucky. Obviously not all of em, but some........

LOVE the black widow ultimate elite keyboard though.......... like LOVE it

Why did you choose to sell the 7G? I'm hoping to get one to upgrade my crappy non-branded wireless keyboard :P.

Did you upgrade from the 7G and what were your experiences with it?
