Steelseries vs Razer

Got the deathadder & the lycosa. I love the deathadder, especially the new 3500dpi version. The Lycosa is a let down in a couple of areas, the num light goes blank when resuming from hibernate (Numlock is still on, the light just isnt) & you cannot remove the keys for cleaning - also the backlight isnt bright enough nor are there any extra keys

I have Steelseries ikari laser its ok but i would like to try Deathadder.
I also have Steelseries QCK+ which is very good.
But it got damage so now i use Roccat sense not so good.

I cant tell because my friend told me that he liked deathadder more then Xai.
I would go for DA :)

I have owned both fairly equal amounts of Steelseries and Razer products and I conclude Razer suit 'me' more.

The reason why I prefer Razer is simply I have been using them since the Razer Boomslang days, and they have always offered products that suit my type of grip and aim style in games, and I have had far less problems from the start. Steelseries on the other hand, I have been through 3 of their mice and each one had major tracking problems and I wasn't particularly keen on the grip shape of them either:

Kinzu - tracking and acceleration problems
Ikari Laser - tracking and acceleration problems plus problems with certain surfaces
Ikari Optical - tracking and acceleration problems

Steelseries support kept saying it was a driver problem and it would eventually get fixed but it never did. Lots and lots of people had tracking and acceleration problems with these mice. I don't know how they fair now however as it has been years since I have last looked and it is possibly they may have fixed the problem eventually as many believed it was a hardware fault. Certainly though when the Kinzu and Ikari first came out, there were lots of problems - I know because I searched tirelessly across the net and saw many other gamers complaining on various forums. Not only that, Steelseries themselves admitted they were 'aware' of the problems.

When compared to the Razer products I have owned:

Razer Boomslang - perfect for all my use but mouse died eventually after a few good years use
Razer Diamondback - perfect in everything I played but left click stopped working after 2yrs
Razer Copperhead - the best of the bunch so far (really loved that mouse) but sensor and mouse wheel died after 4 or so years.

Now I am using the Razer Imperator 2012, and although I don't think it is as good as the Copperhead, it serves my needs perfectly and the build quality is the best I have seen yet from Razer, or any mouse for that matter - I have owned a fair share of Logitech and Microsoft mice as well to compare to.

I won't knock Steelseries though, as they do make good products its just I don't like their mice, and 3 bad experiences with 3 different mice left me feeling bitter. They do make excellent mouse pads though, and I have been using their mousepads and nothing else for years, and they also make good gaming headsets as well.:)

I prefer steel series for the no nonsense aesthetics. I've never actually used a Razer product, just seem too gimmicky.

I used to have a 5Hv2 headset. It broke after a year or so but it wasn't too much hassle getting it replaced, although I did have to send it to some where in europe which cost a bit and took a while. I moved over to a decent dedicated set of headphones after that (along with a new sound card) which obviously blows them out of the water sound wise and I haven't really used any other gaming headsets to compare it to.

I also used one of their cloth mouse mats at some point, no complaints but can't really say I noticed too much difference moving to my boogie bug aim pad which was half the price and three times the size.

Only steelseries product I still use is my xai mouse. Don't really have any complaints, seems durable, tracks well, macro software could be more useful. Not really worth the price tag as I don't use any of the advanced features like the profiles and I play at a pretty low dpi but it feels like good quality and simply design looks nice with my filco mechanical keyboard.

I have had two Razer mice.

First one was Copperhead that worked for about 2 years before the scroll buttons stopped functioning.
The Deathadder going is strong for about 3 years now. Excellent mouse and suits me much more than the Copperhead in size and feel.

I've been put off Razer's headset range due to common reports of bad build quality, which is inexcusable at the price.

I haven't had any experience of Steelseries products but my impression is of a brand which is more reliable in their non-mice ranges.

I like a lot of razer products in theory, but quality never seems to be as high as id expect for the price tag. The company are cool with innovations etc though.

Steel series to me seem to be a good company, but ive only got a couple of mousepads from them.

Reasons for not knowing more about them are:
Logitech > All

Owned 3 Razer mice.

Copperhead 1, developed double left click problem.
Copperhead 2, working fine since 2007, is in storage now.
Lachesis, works fine, am using it right now while Kone+ is on RMA :(

Razer Piranha, had it since 2009 and is still going strong.

Never owned any Steelseries products but I am considering them if my Kone+ replacement breaks again, will also be looking at their mouse mats, again that is if my SOTA gets the same problem as the 1 I have returned.

Again, gotta go with steelseries, just more colourful, less tedious than the repetitive green and black of razor, more customization, better looking gear, ergonomics are flawless. steel series, no doubt they are the best. Not sure if you guys noticed but firmware update for kinzu v2 and kana! Thats reliability you can count on!

Fairly new to pc gaming, however used Steelseries gear with 'other' systems and they never let me down. I've stuck with them for the PC side of things and could not be happier!

I like the look and feel of most of their products and when I have had to contact them, their customer service has always been fantastic.
I have friends with Razer products and most prefer my kit to theirs.

From my experience, 5 years ago I would have said Razer offered the better products, were more popular amongst the market and the build quality of their goods wasn't too bad.

However over the past few years Steelseries have really stepped it up a notch for me, having owned a Xai and now a Sensei I can say these are two top quality mice. Paired with the 9hd they're perfect and tracking is at the best I've ever seen from a mouse.

Had a few razer products too, such as the deathadder and some mats. Although the mats were quite decent I can't say the same about the deathadder for me. It was comfortable but the build quality felt too cheap for my own liking.

I think OP should have added vs Logitech too for an even bigger discussion :D

My Razer keyboard lasted a year before the W key barely worked any more.. (tried all sorts of dismantling and cleaning, to no avail)

I've been through about 4 Razer mice..

Boomslang 2000, years ago. Then a few others after..

Now I'm using the DeathAdder, and it's fantastic. Far better build quality than the previous models. Think I've had this mouse for 5 or 6 years now. I replaced the feet on it this year. It's lasted extremely well. I'll probably get another Razer as my next mouse because of this.

-Unless you want to send me a SteelSeries to test, Ace Modder? :D

In my opinion, Razer wins on looks, design and performance. Steelseries wins on build quality.

Of the two, I would tend to go for Razer products.

With the whole of the market to choose from I have a mix and match approach.

I currently have a Logitech mouse which replaced a Razer Deathadder because it broke and I wanted something more reliable.

In the last month replaced my Logitech keyboard with a Microsoft one, but that was just because the Logitech was starting to look scruffy.

My mousemat is a Razer but that needs replacing soon, and I am considering all brands for that including Razer and Steelseries.

My headset is a Razer Carcharias which is broken (no sound from one ear), however I like it so much I am replacing it with another exactly the same. It is light, comfy, decent sound, decent mic, looks good, I can hear the mrs through it when she's shouting at me because it's open cup, so it fits my specification better than anything else on the market. I considered Sennheiser and Roccat headsets when choosing.

I would like to add my thoughts to the reasoning behind the thread.

Razer sells far more than Steelseries for OcUK (and for almost every reseller in the UK) research in Europe has shown that far more professsional gamers use Steelseries products over Razer and in the online gaming capital of Europe (Sweden) and other European countries that Steelseries is a massive brand which outsells Razer 10:1. I'm just curious as to why the market in the UK is different to much of Western Europe.

I would think the Razer naga would be a major selling mouse for Razer. With the amount of people playing MMO's these days, it's perfect for it.
I bought my Naga last year, and for me at the time, I seen more about Razer than I did with Steelseries. Only until the past month or so, have I considered a Steelseries product.

I get the impression that Steelseries build solid products but, having had good experiences with Razer, both with the hardware and customer service, it kind of makes it difficult to choose anything else.
If I were to buy a mouse today it would be between Razer or Steelseries, but it would have to be a good deal for me to go with SS.

Currently only own a Razer BlackWidow keyboard (not the ultimate version) and have to say I love it.

Can't compare to Steelseries as I haven't used any of their stuff but as a first product I'm impressed.

I have to say I think some of Razers prices do seem a little steep on some things (headsets for example) so In that instance I will buy a differnet brand.
