Step up from s2000?

Interesting read as i've recently been having thoughts of going down to one car (from the S2000 daily & the R32 GTR) but am trying to fight off the urge for some V8 in my life... keep finding myself looking at Monaro VXR's for ~10k...

Do think I'd miss the convertible though as frankly the roofs always down unless its raining very heavily, so keeps pulling me back from looking at cars like the Monaro.

Whenever I look at convertibles I think for under 10k it'd always be the S2000 really, although tempted to try a Z4 3.0 (would say Z4M but couldn't justify the cost to be honest)

This is me exactly. I'd miss the roof down too much
The z4m is also my biggest temptation as it would be a definite upgrade.. But is so much more moneys
My motorway driving now means a harder decision

Very noisy car at 70-80 s2k

It's a relatively noisy car at motorway speeds but then most convertibles will be to be honest (i'd imagine anyway). My old S2000 I did about 15k going up/down the A34 which was hellish but when the sun was shining and you got a good run it made it all worthwhile :)

Forgot to mention the TVR Chimaera was another consideration for me but not sure if I'd be brave enough (especially to have as a daily!)

What sort of amount of motorway driving do you do, and is there any option to avoid it for a more fun route? My current commute would be 5 mins quicker if I took mways but I stick to some single carriageway A roads which are far more fun :)

no, there literally is no other way but the Mway unfortunately, i literally live ontop of it and work in peterborough in a place that is 1 mile off the Mway

this was my main reason to upgrade, and it was definitely an upgrade

the z4 has got fantastic fuel economy for a 3l lump, but please be aware of people quoting stupid mpg, I managed 400 miles from a tank driving like a saint to prove a point and win a rather worthwhile bet, this included slip streaming lorries etc.. no way in gods green earth would you see this on a day to day basis especially not around town (I'd guess circa 200 for that)

in the real world you will get ~250 miles from a tank and it's about 5l more to fill up than the s2k so the two cars are very similar. I would expect my s2k got around 19-20mpg and apparently the z4 gets 23.9, that's driving it like a car not a hearse. be wary of people quoting stupidly good mpg, for some reason everyone likes to add 5mpg to every figure they quote to enable them to sleep better.

either that or they all live at the bottom of a hill and get taken home in a car transporter :)

the z4 is infinitely quieter, infinitely tighter (oo-er) and just a much nicer car to drive and live with on a day to day basis. the only thing it doesnt have is the 5-8k crazy grunt, but arriving after a long journey not sweating, shattered and exhausted is a price well worth paying for a slight lack of high end urgency :)

Who compares fuel usage by 'miles per tank', when not only are the tank sizes different (not 5L difference btw, 50L in the S2k and 63L in the BMW) but presumably the car doesn't stop running having drained the tank dry each time you fill up so you're also basing your massively flawed assumptions on either the hilariously inaccurate 'range' display or the equally inaccurate fuel light.
Either way, this discussion is worthy of a double facepalm of massively retarded failing.

you might want to research your reply before mindlessly creating figures :p

it is actually 55 litres for the z4 and 50 litres for the s2k

i could continue but that would seem vindictive

i ran mine to the point where it went beyond 0 and displayed '----'

I then managed to put 54.96 litres into it *strokes reasonably accurate trip computer and probably rather clogged fuel pump*

:D wasn't intending to offend, I've just been laughing at the guys on the z4 forum who are convinced they can get a steady 450 miles from their 3.0 z4s, there are similarly deluded people on the s2ki forum. last thing I would want when buying a car was someone to tell me their fuel economy based on driving perpetually downhill, with a massive wind assisted sail or whilst being towed.

I used to do Torquay to Portsmouth and back in mine, around 300 miles and would usually get the light on when nearly home.

Generally drove it pretty leisurely on that run with the odd bit of 'spirited' driving.

I do miss it a bit, think next summer is when I'll wish I still had it :p

Actually going back to where I was posting, I was referring to the BMW M3 not the Z4 :p

Anyway I maintain you have no real idea of how accurate your 'range' meter is. I drove my VW Transporter to what I can only presume to be fairly close to the limit (fuel warnings etc) and when I was no longer brave enough to continue I put just over 82L in my '80L' tank.. and unless I actually run it until it stops I doubt I'll ever really know how much fuel it's carrying, or how many miles I could get from a tank.
