Step up from s2000?

a z4 3.0si would be a stepup in every single respect and would hit your budget requirement perfectly

I did precisely this and have never looked back

From what I have read I don't think I would like the z4 3.0, steering is the reason.
So the suspension got softer? That's not good. Did this happen at the time of the facelift?
I like the oversteer that I sometimes get in mine

Will, I really respect your views on things as you've driven and owned cars many of us will never get near, but do you really think that?

I know you didn't like your S2000, but do you really think a z4 outhandles an s2000?

I've only had a quick blast in a z4 and I hated it, handling felt awful compared to my s2000. I will concede the interior is a bit nicer though - however whilst the s2k is plastic fantastic, it is definitely functional.

Fair enough if you do feel that way, but with your car history I'm shocked you'd say that.

no no i just owned another s2k, an ap2 for the last 7 months, I loved it, its just a bit too raw for me, the z4 is simply a plusher car, maybe im getting old (well that's obvious :p) but I feel i get the same performance, less rattling (which honestly drove me mad!), better fuel economy and just a nicer place to be.

if you are looking to augment your experience from an s2k but require similar characteristics then the z4 is honestly an obvious choice, if you can find an additional few grand then you can get the z4m and get the performance boost too, but honestly the 3.0si I have has power in spades and you don't have to downshift to get it.

see if you can blag a long term test drive in a z, I really don't think you will regret it, I certainly haven't, here she is just in case eye candy helps sway you

that was £9999

does look amazing, i cant deny that
i admit i havent test driven one, but i do quite like how today for example i had to be very careful on the freshly dampened roads going round a couple of roundabouts.. i could feel it on the edge of slipping, do you get this communication through electronic steering?

You have electric power steering.

i know its electric but i thought the BMWs was different (in not sure how but i have read it a lot)

if you ignore the stencils and overkill body etc i do think it looks amazing in orange with black bonnet/boot

now thats s2k i would drive - stickers.... Hate piles of stickers on cars :/

i have a thing for orange

i still want an orange convertible, with black wheels and orange calipers! cant justify the cost of a respray on mine as im not sure how much longer i will keep it

Another vote for a Boxter S - stacks more low down torque than the S2K plus with the right exhaust on them they sound the mutts when you wring them.

I managed to test drive the E46 M3 yesterday and as amazing as it was I don't think it would beat an S2000 that bad on a twisty track with a good driver.. The M3 gave a lot more confidence around the bends without the worry of the back coming out though.. i was quite shocked how good it was and obviously on the straights it would beat the S2.

The M was clearly a much more rounded car though is all areas. I kind of wanted to take it home.. I had a big grin all the way. The SMG was violent on the upshifts though, didn't really like that but sweet on the downshifts.. The big brakes did their job as well.

I just dunno if the costs involved in running one would outweigh the gains over the S2 but i guess it would depend heavily on your intended application.

z4m is beyond my price range,

more low torque is my main issue with the s2 really

M3, no way, its just too damn ugly to me..unfortunately i am quite fussy on the looks of a car

I've driven a Z4M and much as it's faster than an S2000 in a straight line, it doesn't have that mania that an S2000 in VTEC has. With pipes and an FIPK, there's nothing I've yet driven that has such an angry sound short of an LS1 with open pipes.

See my post further up about N/A Modding.

Pick up the parts second hand if you don't want to go wild spending thousands. There are decent gains to be had, even with N/A tuning, especially in the midrange.

im possibly reconsidering this choice, most of my driving is now up and down the 4 lane stretch of the a1m and tbh i cant obviously get the fun out of driving that i am used too.

there are about 5 corners that arent roundabouts

there was a possibility of a relocate to marlborough, but just this week i was told this is probably not going to happen

the fuel consumption alone for a e46 m3 vs a s2000 is win. MY old s2000 would barley give 200 miles to a tank the supercharged m3 (500bhp) was 330miles per tank
