I thought this would be a funny read when I saw it on Twitter, guessing it was Newsthump, The Onion or something similar, but nope.

The Telegraph.

"According to reports , Irish police are investigating Fry, once voted the most intelligent man on TV, for insulting God. To be precise Fry accused God of being an ‘utter maniac’.

The Irish Independent claimed police launched its inquiry after comments made by Fry during an interview with the national broadcaster RTE.

A member of the public contacted the Gardai after Fry disclosed his thoughts on God in an interview first broadcast as long ago as February 2015."

The offence of blasphemy, included in the Defamation Act, is punishable by a fine of 25,000 euro under Irish law.

Now, I can imagine Ireland is still heavily religious area, but this is just insane.

Never heard of the station before, nor the show, but I'm guessing it must be heavily religious. Especially when you see the reaction of the interviewers face during this answer.

Dug it out, as the telegraph hadn't linked to it.

Clip was from 2015, yet it's being investigated now.

RTE is the Irish version of the BBC give or take so it's a major channel.

Gay Byrne is probably what they would do to Stephen Fry if that religious lot still had more clout.

Wish I'd thought of that punny line, but was still in shock from such foolery over there. ;)

how dare you think for yourself, question my faith, question the morals and character of my mass murdering, pscyopathic sadistic god who created a place of eternal torture just because you don't accept it, and question the fly and cancer in children plus global flood is anything but pure "love" so I'll just have the "shutdown face" and "blank eye" and "squirm in my seat" reaction.

lol

Gets even weirder.

"According to a report in the Irish Independent newspaper, no publicised cases of blasphemy have been brought before the courts since the law was introduced in 2009 and a source said it was "highly unlikely" that a prosecution against Fry would take place."

2009?

Why are such draconian laws being allowed in 2009?

Is their God really so weak that it is insulted by what us mere humans say about it, and so powerless it needs us to stand up for and protect it? If so, then in what way does it deserve their respect and worship?

This is a country where abortions are illegal unless required to save the life of the mother, it's no surprise the people in charge take offence at god being called stupid.

FEAR.

Utter and complete fear, scared of their god, crap themselves even if they question or stop and question their god even in the slightest.

Surely a god so terrifying is perfectly capable of standing up for itself if it so chooses/deems it necessary?

Stephen Fry hasn't been smitten/smited/smote (whatever the correct word for the thing an angry God does), so I can only assume he doesn't care/didn't hear it/doesn't exist

The reason is because someone reported it — the reason they reported to highlight what a stupid law it is. They don't mention that though as it wouldn't make a good news story

They'll investigate it, put it to bed, and move along.
Amazing the religious zealot had not seen this two years ago.
They love old Gaybo, and would watch him ad infinitum, must have been abroad when it first aired and only saw a repeat now, as the trodolyte wouldn't understand on demand viewing.
It was an absolutely brilliant answer, probably the best answer to the question they've ever had in that series of interviews.

The point is religion is to create utter obedience, abandonment of your own free thinking, questioning moral of that being. For example if their god flayed and tortured babies, it's because god loves those babies. Because their god is about love. Even as their arms are being pulled off, the followers would not pity the babies, but actually love their god for doing a loving deed, and rejoice it. Insansity of own morals, not stopping, and saying "no you're a murderous sadistic god and I want nothing to do with you"

You've never heard of RTE? It's Ireland's national broadcaster.

Catholicism is massively influential over there. Every little village has a church slap bang in the middle. I even found a church where you could pick up free bottles of holy water. I took one, and used it to water our pot plants at home. Unsurprisingly, it was no more effective than normal water. :p

Unfortunately they're a bit backwards compared to the UK on these matters - also have issues re: abortion (Northern Ireland has ****** up laws re: abortion too). The US no doubt is at risk of regressing in this area too under Trump - well the abortion laws - speech is at least well protected there.

although they did vote in gay marrige ;)
