I clicked on the first link on that page and it pulled up a picture of a road five minutes from where I live. How is that possible, are they presented based on IP recognition?

Shows you just how big USA is. Its taken them this long to find the wreckage of the plane. If it had happened in Britain I doubt it would have taken a fraction of the time.
