Steve Jobs has died. What effect, if any, will it have on Apple and the tech industry?

Well Apples share price will have quite a drop over the short term no doubt; I dont foresee it affecting the day-to-day running of Apple or revisions of its existing products as no doubt theres already a concreted vision where those are heading.

What is to be worried is whats next for Apple - its not like their product line isnt relatively mature now - its not stale but its where Steve Jobs would have been instrumental in deciding whats next and to a point how it should be tackled.

Conversely though some could think this could be the 'unshackling' of Apple where the loss of such a definite vision could allow them a bit more leeway, so rather than dealing with just product synergies they could also go after bleeding edge technology implementation.

Whatever happens its going to be the most interesting time at Apple since the iMacs turned up...

I can't say I'm surprised, it is you after all. :p

I wasn't actually planning on doing, but I made it for someone and then noticed a few people were using it so I thought, why not? He's arguably the greatest ever innovator of a field I'm very interested in.

Everyone here has a lot to thank him for, whether they want to admit it or not.

Arguably indeed. :p

I think people tend to exaggerate quite a bit, just how important he's been in technological advancements. I know and understand how influential he's been, but people need to stop acting like he's some sort of technological messiah who will never be "replaced".

You really have to ask? You're on a technology forum and you can't think of anything?

Oh dear.

You made the claim, you back it up!

I don't own an apple product, I don't use apple software, please tell me what exactly you are claiming he has done that I need to thank him for!

I think Robbo is confusing "influential" or "of benefit" with a general everybody should be thankful. I can't deny that he's done some good things, and you could argue that people who love Pixar movies have a lot to thank him for because of his role within the company.

The computer market, the smartphone market and the portable music player market (to name a few things) have all been driven forward at a dramatic speed because of him.

My point is, whether you use Apple products or not, much of the technology most of us use today has likely been influenced by Apple to some extent.

Because apple influences competitors. I would highly doubt android would even exist, if apple didn't create the smartphone frenzy for example.

RIP steve, a very talented man, no one should die that young but hopefully it wont do Apple any favours. I hate iTunes, IOS and iphones/ipad/ipod but OSX aint bad and it's hardware is nice. Shame it don't play games or I might buy one.

Mobile is the future and with that being Apples biggest shortcomming Windows and Android will dominate the future anyway.

S*** thats what happens when you have two threads open at once.

Surely this is curtains for Apple. Not sure how much more innovation they can do based on the foundations left by Steve. Lets hope (for their employees sake) there are some other people who can step forwards and try to fill his shoes.

I'm not sure it will have a big impact. The rest of the design team who put together the iXXXX are still at Apple.

BBC had an article a while back looking at Apple post Jobs and asked the same question
