Hi all.

Have just had weak moment and gave in and bought the Foxconn BlackOps x48 mobo as they are silly cheap.

The question is, do I stick with my Q6600 (D0 stepping one) or get a different processor?

New CPU purchase will not be for a month or so as wont be able to do any work on it all till Christmas time, so have plenty of time to hum and hah over this one.

Was contemplating getting the Corsair H50 cooler too, to throw more spanners in the works now.

Cheers all

Paul

Stick - The Q6600 is a great CPU (Assuming you mean the G0 stepping).

But going for an H50 is a great idea, will allow you to overclcok to 3.5GHz on that chip - a nice spep up from 2.4GHz stock. Also, you can transfer the cooler to any future upgrade, so a very nice investment.

Also, you may want to invest in 4GB of RAM (like this), it will give you another boost to your performance.

Andi's advice is good - the h50 is a great cooler and will get more MHz out of your present CPU plus it has the added benefit that it can be ported over to your next next build.

You really will notice a significant boost moving to 4gig of memory and if your a gamer you could upgrade your GFX card and drop in a 4870 at the same time as they're great value.

The overall effect would seem like a new computer - for relatively little outlay.

Pigging norra, that was heck of a lot of great replies, in no short amount of time.

Did mean the G0 stepping one, but wasnt too sure as have slept a lot recently.

I got some of this to go in the BO mobo.

Was going to get a new GFX card, but was going to wait until i get back in december gefore getting one as am sure there will be some new silicone out by then and the latest and greates now will be a lot cheaper then.

H50 is on my list then.

Cheers all for the help and advice

The OP is currently running DDR2 RAM. Your link is to DDR3 so won't work in his current board. The principle of getting fast RAM is a good one though - just make sure it is compatible with the board.

I have a q6600 and have been looking at the 45nm quad cores, as the ambient temperature is stifling my overclocking.

But where as you bought a new motherboard for the 775, I don't know whether to wait and upgrade to 1366 or a better 775 board and a yorkfield cpu.

Post how it works out!

i suggest improving your cooling, and just push your Q6600 harder. No point in upgrading your CPU just yet, as improvements in software have not yet caught up with hardware. Plus, you have a quad core which is pretty decent and holds its own. When software becomes more multithreaded, you will see your performance rise accordingly. Out of interest, what OS are you running?

Have never had any success with OC'ing ever. That was one of the reasons behind this board as hopefully will be able to get more life out of the ole 6600 while saving for the next major upgrade.

Timefalls, am currently running Vista HP 32, but have Windows 7 on pre-order, so will be changing over that when i get back (64 bit).

Hoping that the H50 will give me some decent cooling. Big aim for that is to try and make some silence as new GF not that happy with whiny fans...cant live with them, cant kill them....

well for starters should be able to just push the fsb to 333 for 3ghz without any other modification and it won't add temps to your CPU.

the H50 will provide excellent cooling for your Q6600, and glad you are running Vista/7 as opposed to XP, as the former have greater support for multithreading.

as for a quieter computing experience, get the largest fans your case can take, and run them at a lower speed, as they can move more air than a smaller fan which makes the annoying whining noise.

I was planning adding two of these fans in a push/pull config onto the H50, as reading other posts on the kit, this seems to be the favourable option to do. Plus i can then drop the case fans in my Antec P182 down to low, so reducing them to nothing.

Was also looking at replacing my current PSU with this, as seems to get favourable reviews and hopefull dioes what it says on the tin.

Cheers

Hadn't looked at that one andi, cheers.

'This year, I will mostly be buying Corsair......'

Does anyone know what the sound levels of those two PSU's are like next to each other (sorry for getting off OP topic too)
