Yeah I remember those Athlons, I missed once because I was using a screwdriver that was too small, luckily it didn't hit the motherboard but it was close. The Intel coolers aren't much better, I had to reset the pins several times because the cooler was not aligned correctly.
If its a new build its much easier to fit it before the motherboard is fixed into the case
Even if it isn't its still a good idea to take the motherboard out and do it.

I really should do something to your account for that, but some of the UB's make
I hate them, but not as much as I hated the Athlon/XP heatsink mechanisms.
